How much wine do you drink daily?

I like wine but it doesn’t like me. I’ve found that a rose coloured wine is the least offensive. The best wine I’ve ever had was a home-made rhubarb wine, given to my son at Christmas, by the head gardener of the nursery where he works.

What gadget invented in the past ten years can't you live without?

Shame on me. That should have been “really” cold snap. I wasn’t minding my grammar.

What gadget invented in the past ten years can't you live without?

I’m not really interested in all of these new little gadgets; anything with more than an on/off switch is too complicated for me to bother with. The one simple little gadget that I do really like is my remote starter for my vehicle. When it’s minus forty, dark and snowy outside, and my vehicle is parked out on the street, with just a little click of the button, my vehicle roars to life and in about 10 minutes, it’s nice and toasty in there. If I’m at work during a real cold snap and there are no plug-ins, I can start it up for a few minutes every couple of hours to make sure it’s not dead when I finally leave.

Have high gas prices affected your Memorial Day weekend plans?

What are you paying for gas per gallon in your areas? I heard someone at work today saying something about $1.29 per litre. Converted to an American gallon (3.78 litres), that would make gas here cost $4.78 per American gallon, considering that the US dollar and Canadian dollar are pretty much equal.

Literacy Partners 24th Anniversary Celebration of Readings at the New York State Theater

Mugsy, that’s exactly what I was wondering when I saw the photo of Elizabeth Peabody. Hmmmm. To get dressed up again and go out to some event. It’s been a long time. I’ve started missing that lately.

Would you feel safe with a woman as commander in chief? Why or why not?

I suppose that the reason this question is still being asked is because you still haven’t had a female commander-in-chief … and still may not have one by the end of this election. Just as many others have answered, it would depend on which woman we are talking about. A woman anything just because she’s a woman? Definitely not. A woman who is as good as or better than any of the men? Absolutely. However, in some cases, I have to admit that the particular gender of a person may be beneficial or detrimental. I’m a registered nurse who works on an acute, locked psychiatric unit. (That’s where you’ll find many of the men in nursing.) Sometimes, when we have a patient who is about to come unglued, I’m secretly relieved that there is one or two burly, male staffers about. However, I’ve also noticed that when it is an all-female staff that I’m working with, the likelihood of one of these patients coming unglued is much less likely. We women have had to rely on other strategies than just brute physical force to keep control on the unit and I must say, I love it when it’s an “only female staff” shift. I try not to pull out the gender card very often, but I’ve been trying to figure out what the problems at work often stem from and the last few months, I’ve had to come to the conclusion that it’s still the old boys club even now. You still have to work harder to prove yourself as a woman and when a man makes an executive decision, he’s hailed as a strong leader; when a woman makes an executive decision, she’s just a bitch. I’m afraid we haven’t come as far as we might have hoped. I do, however, believe that women have often wielded a lot of power … it just was always behind the scenes, and not so overt. Don’t we as women share some of the blame? After all, who’s been raising all of these bad boys?

Okay, how come this thing wasn’t on here last night? And yet, all of your responses are from May 21st. Isn’t it the 22nd? I’m home ill today so maybe I’ve missed something. I know; my computer illiteracy is showing. What am I doing wrong?

Is it impolite to Google someone?

Thanks, Carol L. Well, I kind of thought that was the whole point of the internet … an information, communication highway. If it is on the internet, it is there for anyone to find. As Pamela Munro pointed out, if you wish to remain anonymous, use an alias. Unfortunately, all kinds of things that people would prefer to be kept secret, make it on to the net at the hands of others. Time for my big confession. My name isn’t really Eliza, of course … it’s just the pet name my dad used to use. There are already several Liz’s and Elizabeths on this blog so I felt the need to use something else.

Is it impolite to Google someone?

Umm, what exactly does it mean to “google someone”? To type a name into a search and see what comes up?

Ted Kennedy's Illness Is a Potential Tragedy for the Nation

Sorry, I didn’t mean I don’t wish Ted Kennedy well during his time of illness, and I should be more gracious. I am rebuked.

What is the most embarrassing piece of music you own?

Oh, and by the way. Somewhere, deep in the recesses of my childhood I remember “The Singing Nun” and “Dominique”. Awesome. How to cheer oneself up. So glad several of you posters referenced this classis. My husband and I are composing the “Top 10 Corniest Love Songs of All Time”. We already have “I Think I Love You” by David Cassidy, and “Honey” by Bobby Goldsboro. Hey, what about the classic “Stay Awhile” by The Bells, circa 1971? Ooooooh, it makes me quiver!!!!!!

What is the most embarrassing piece of music you own?

Celine Dion and Shania Twain. But to my credit, someone thought it would be funny to give me, a country music hater, the Shania Twain CD. Unfortunately, I bought Celine Dion myself. She used to be a Canadian, you know. From Montreal. I bought those two CD’s during a particularly awkward stage of life: My Mid-life Crisis. But I’m all over that now. Now she’s an American, from what I hear. Not quite sure how that works. Anyway, I haven’t found anyone whom I can pawn off her over-worked, over-wraught, histrionics.

Quite beautiful. And capivating. “

Did the movie 'The Bucket List' with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman get you thinking? If so, what's at the top of your list?

I hate watching movies. It’s one of my least favourite things to do. Yet, I have a favourite movie: Driving Miss Daisy. My second favourite: The Colour Purple. I’m Canadian. That’s why I use all of those u’s. Color is spelled colour. Honor is spelled honour. I can’t intelligently discuss all of these movies or the fanfare surrounding your upcoming elections and however you choose your candidates. It’s a mystery to me. I’m just a Canadian.
