DeBúrca obj: I don’t know what’s wrong with this thread. I have been trying for three days to tell you how much I enjoyed your “caption”. It should be a winner but…? Anyway you have my vote, and I hope you get this message (sent by deviating from the normal procedure). LR.

How do you fall asleep after a long, stressful day?

Joan, I often wondered why many of your messages were dated with numbers indicating such early hours of the morning. I simply concluded that the labelling was incorrect because nobody would be up that early composing detailed responses such as yours, for lucky people like me, or many other friends of yours on this site.  Now I know the secret.  So that’s how you do it.  (5am) !! Keeping milkman’s hours. I must train myself to do that. I’ll try anything once.

The wOw Interview: Serena Williams – What She Learned at the U.S. Open

Competitors in any sport face incidents which cause rage and retaliation in some form or another. Sometimes against the officials and sometimes against other players. In the heat of battle a competitor can easily become unglued and act disrespectfully. Usually the spell subsides and the play will continue. Generally the altercation will be forgotten and the players simply move on. However, such situations occurring in front of fans are far more serious and very disconcerting. Fans don’t like to see their favourites being maltreated but at the same time, they absolutely do not abide by uncontrolled outbursts of poor sportsmanship. Serena’s behaviour went far beyond the acceptable level of heated retaliation and her reactions were completely unacceptable in not only being against the set rules of the game but also embarrassingly discourteous to tennis fans in general who expect all participants to play by the rules. Imposing money fines on an offending player is a useless form of punishment. It’s only money and most professionals can afford paying the fine regardless of the amount involved. The only effective way to punish such disrespectful disobedience is by denying the offender the right to participate in the game they so obviously love to play, probably more than anything else in life. And the suspension should be seriously imposed in proportion to the degree of the infraction. Serena was wrong. She knows the rules and she broke the rules, and reacted in a very unsporting and certainly unladylike manner. Instead of the large fine she was handed, Serena should have been suspended from playing any professional tennis match for a period of at least one year. In all Professional Sports, strict rules and regulations must be imposed and steadfastly maintained and obeyed, in order to protect the integrity of the sport.

Florence - I’m just about bursting myself laughing at this one. I might have thought it - but you said it. It’s great !

And now she’s Secretary of State ??

Announcing the Winner of Our 'Caption This' Contest

Congratulations to the winners. Both very good captions, IMHO. I found quite a few very select entries in this week’s collection. (They could’a bin contentahs) ! Very good pick by the judges.

Liz Smith: Mark Rydell Recalls His Blooming 'Rose' With Bette Midler and Challenging Kate Hepburn (Video)

Bette Midler is one in a million. I must say though, that she represents one of the biggest disappointments I ever suffered in my life, because a while back, I was scheduled to work on a very interesting project in which she was to be featured. I so looked forward to it because I have always admired her so greatly. Unfortunately, the project fell through and was permanently cancelled. I have always been of the opinion that she was never used to the greatest advantage of her many adoring fans. She truly has exceptional acting abilities and as a singer, she is simply incredible. Always delivering flawless stellar performances and always rewarding her fans with unforgettable deliveries of some of the greatest songs ever written. When she sang it, it was hers; she owned it. She is one of the privileged few individuals we hear stories about, where once she was created, they threw the mould away. Can anyone ever forget the wonderful loving arm waving gestures as she sang the beautiful going-away tribute to Johnny Carson when he left the air? “Such a woman she is” ! I have always loved her.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Phyllis Doyle Pepe - Well of course you’re quite right and you‘ve got me pegged exactly. Everything you say is me, all over, and in spades.  Plus the “shoes”, per Liz - and I even qualify for the preferences expressed by Rainbow Power, above -  except, I don’t do windows.   (but pDP - you forgot to mention “Humility”, which as you can see…is another fine quality I possess). lol ? (I hope) ?

Eileen Alannah - "He sees me when I’m sleeping…"  - My choice so far, would certainly be this one. Clever and funny! I hope the judges take a close look at this one. Congratulations Eileen.

L.R.

Lesley Stahl: 'I Was Left With the Impression Ted Jr. Would Run for Public Office Someday' (Video)

newzie snoozie - Many of us have lived, loved and cried with the Kennedys. They truly are a most remarkable family and I hope they always remain.

What you say about some of to-day’s children is so true and I too have contemplated the very question you ask. Could it be that the people who should be teaching our youngsters the “right way” are the very ones who were not taught the “right way” by their parents. Maybe a generation was missed there somewhere? It is not an easy problem to solve.

"Hello, this is Carlton, your doorman speaking"… …

Announcing the Winner of Our 'Caption This' Contest

That’s just great JackJack - but how are you fixed for socks and underwear?

Caption This!

Caption This ! - Oh Boy ! I can’t wait to see the gems the judges will pick as winners for this one.

Announcing the Winner of Our 'Caption This' Contest

Congratulations to the winners, but, please: somebody clarify. Are the captions supposed to humorous? Or perhaps just clever? Or simply “mind boggling”, as many recent entries seem to have been? Just asking, so most of us can be aware of how to approach the challenge next time we are persuaded.
