Channeling Norman Mailer

Thanks for sharing this with us

How do you feel about Iraq right now? What is your biggest fear, and what is your biggest hope?

It always was a mistake and it is a bigger one now. How many soldiers do we need to loose? How many Iraquis are dying? How many are now returning needing arms and legs and get little or no help. It is a scandal on our historical records.

Who Is She?

Been there, after several such episodes I kicked him out and never missed him. Dummy me, I thought it was my fault.

The Friendship of Liz Smith and Ann Richards

Thank you, Angel Ann is watching us, wonder what she would say about this election.

I Read the News Today, Oh Boy: Will Obama Prove Them Wrong?

I have listened to so many speeches, promises , lies and truths and my 76 year old liberal brain is having senior moments. I trust no one in politics and I hope I will be able to pick a winner in November. One who ends the war and allows me to still work for the grocery money and the care I have to give to my Alzheimer patient husband.

What signs, if any, of recession have you noticed?

I work as an auditor in a ladies clothing store. It used to take me 4 to 5 hours to count the deposits. Now I am finished in less than 2 hours. Did I suddenly become this fast machine? not at all. I just do not have money to count. people do not need another blouse or skirt when their kids need $4.00 milk and you just paid $55.00 to fill your van. I am concerned about when the big bosses will decide to close the store.

What Happens to Us After We Die?

I just KNOW that we all will go to a better place. How do I know? I just know it. That is enough for me. I am not religious but spiritual.

Are the goings-on within polygamist sects any of our business? Should they be monitored? By whom?

JB is right, how did we let these activities continue? Children are our main concern but what now? Are we ready to deprogram? Are we ready to handle the results of our stepping in? This is huge and will not go away overnight. Will the government or another religious group take over?

Growing Up, I Was Bored 'Quite Often' ... Today, Nobody Is Bored

Bored as a kid? Yup I was. Only child and living in Belgium. My parents would only turn on the light when it was pitch dark outside. So we sat in uncomfortable kitchen chairs on the patio or the garden and told stories while the mosquitoes had their dinner on us. Most the talks I had heard a hundred times and I was no longer interested in my parents and grandparents WW1 stories. I waited for the sky to turn black. On Sundays my mother used to take naps and the radio would only play opera in the “Bel Canto hour”. I tried to occupy myself in a world of make belief. Then 1940 hit and there was excitement. Living next to a target electrical plant, we lived with constant alarms, false and real. We ran to the shelter day and night. We did not sleep much. The garden had to be enlarged for more vegetables and My chore was to check for slugs and drown them in salt. We started a rabbit family and more and more stalls had to be cleaned. We no longer felt safe to sit till the sky was dark. We sat behind windows covered in blue papers so no lights would show. For some odd reason I no longer was bored, scared? yes, hungry? yes, not bored. My grandson with all the electronic gadgets he can ask for tells me that he is bored. Is it perhaps that we need more “work” rather than playtime?

Gypsy’s Personal Guide to Doctors, Drivers, Taxis, Shippers and Helicopters in the Med

Like Mamacita I was wondering if I am out of my league with this site, then I gave it a longer thought and decided that I love this site. The women are smart, professionals, and so am I. Only my check balance is very different and that is OK too. I know no envy. The only luxury that we actually do have is our health, if it is great then we are billionaires.

What, or whom, do you take for granted?

I take for granted that I am still working at 76 and that I will continue to do so.

Gypsy’s Personal Guide to Doctors, Drivers, Taxis, Shippers and Helicopters in the Med

We may not all travel in style of the rich and famous but it is always good to know that we can get help. We needed a dr in Torremolinos,(yes I know it is a tourist trap but we travel cheap) the hotel got us a young doctor who spoke English within 10 minutes from our call. He took care of my husband , his hotel call and meds was 40.00. In Belgium at a very inexpensive B and B , my grandson became very ill. A dr came on New Years day and checked him out. Cost for that service was 29.00 (4 years ago) only problem was he refused to give my grandson antibiotics because now in Belgium they only give them when absolutely needed! We have traveled a lot, but never in luxury hotels, just clean cheap ones, if the bathroom is down the hall, so be it. Travel off season?Of course. Less crowded too. Bring a raincoat! Meals too expensive ? buy bread cheese and if coke or bottle of wine and have a ball in your room. Travel long distances in a night train schedule and save a night hotel. Do not have the money for a limo? in Europe there are plenty of taxi’s and inexpensive local transportation and oodles of trains going everywhere all day long. If you cant do it this year ( I can’t either this year) then you dream about it for the next year.

Are you scared about losing your job?

It’s very simple, I am an auditor in ladies dress shop. It took me 4 hours to count the money and balance my deposits. Now I am out of there in 1 hour , not enough money to count. In a way I am almost out of the door.
