My Funeral Oration for the Late Writer Dominick Dunne, by Liz Smith

Thank you Liz.  A  tribute of sorts to a great man who filled our lives in so many wondrous ways.  Never met him but I miss him already.

Obama Confronts Abortion Controversy at Notre Dame (Video)

God bless Mr Obama to have the guts to address this thorny issue in front of Catholic double standard.  In Catholic countries, well to do women have abortions -even though it is illegal- in the best sanitary conditions, paying huge fees for this right of choice & poor women died by the thousands in septic neglect.  Someone has to be brave enough to call spade a spade & remind the world that women have the right to choose.

Liz Smith: Sharon Stone – They Love Her in Croatia

Haven’t visited wowowow as much I used to, but today I feel like joining Liz in complimenting DPC, he is a magnificent chronicler of all things New York.  I’ve been following his columns for years & it was there I found about the Wow ladies.  As a lover of the city, his website is the most enjoyable way to keep in touch.  Gracias DPC!!!

Bernie Madoff's Right Hand, Frank DiPascali, May Name Names

What else is new???? When the boat is sinking…….rats will always provide tons of info and then some.  Just human nature at its worst.

How do you define success?

Success in life means freedom to choose.

No Makeover for Susan Boyle, Says 'Talent' Judge

Ms Holden you’ve got real sense.  I thouroughly agree with her statement, specially with the "underdog" factor.  From  the first time I saw (& heard!!!) the video & specially for her choice of song, I felt that this lady, somehow, was translating into music the pathos of this particular zeitgeist.  It is good for the soul to meditate on the lyrics of it, that’s why we all wept along.

Amidst chaos, very similar to the one upon which Les Miz was based, we are all underdogs, we feel beaten, but, still, we can soar above……

Some say that people crave simple pleasures in trying economic times. Which of these do you turn to when the going gets tough?

Dear Christine perhaps you’ll have to realize that denial is the first stage of the process.  What we are facing right now is so compelling that understanding of the basics will arrive sooner than expected.  Hold on tight!!!

Some say that people crave simple pleasures in trying economic times. Which of these do you turn to when the going gets tough?

I understand you so well.  Poverty is a fact of life, but poverty in a rich country is downright immoral,

I live in Argentina & in December 2001 we had a financial crack + political turmoil so devastating that at first, people were just paralyzed.  There was no money in the banks, credit cards were not acceptable in most places. just hard cash would buy you food or medicines. This used to be a very rich country, the urban middle classes had no idea how misery looks like.

For the first time in our lives we saw thousands of people searching the garbage bags every night, I am sad to report that even now in 2009 we still see them, day in, day out. There  has never been a contingency plan to support these poor, just periodical hand-outs when election time arrives.  How they survive you may wonder.  Just plain solidarity, there are many organized NGO & religious centers doing this job but the secret is that most of us are helping one or more families out of our own pockets.  It is good for the soul, as you give and receive at the same time & it also makes you more responsible in the use of your resources.  I guess you people are going to live through  the same kind of experience.  It’s very scary at the beginning but you’ll be surprised how powerful you’ll become when the outer trappings of wealth just fall off & the joy of a good deed done makes your day & discover blessings in places you never saw before.  Toughen up & be of good cheer as my Grandma used to say.

In the harsh light of this new frugal economy, what did you buy/spend money on in recent years that you now regret?

Needless to say I’ll take my humble diamonds along for the ride, a girl needs some support when facing the unknown.

In the harsh light of this new frugal economy, what did you buy/spend money on in recent years that you now regret?

Eka dear, diamonds cheer you up anytime.  I always say that if I have to go due to some sort of horrendous external mayhem. I’ll just wrap myself up in mink, grab a bottle of good champagne. take some time for meditation & bettering my soul for the  long haul, & voila!!! ready to go…….

G-20 Protests in London Turn Violent: Open Thread for wowOwow Readers

You better get used to protesters. this is just the beginning.  Guess some of your comments are based on the fact that  most US citizens have  not been confronted with real poverty for a long time.  It doesn’t really matter at this point in time who is footing the bill if such is the case, the real crux of the problem is that with unemployment on the rise everywhere the number of  poor people will increase exponentially, so will their anger & their hunger.  And this time around will be worse because thanks to mass media they all know how the fortunate ones live.  And the masses will rise, as old Mr Marx used to write years ago.  It will get real ugly, mark my words.

In the harsh light of this new frugal economy, what did you buy/spend money on in recent years that you now regret?

Lovely coincidence!!! I’ve been re-reading Love in a  cold climate & the Pursuit of Love over the last week.  I do prefer Pursuit but both are so highly enjoyable.  Guess reading Mitford is a good antidote for the dullness of these difficult times.  I admire that special brand of brit humour, the valiant attitude when facing troublesome realities.

Joan Juliet Buck on 'Cougar' María Félix

I’m glad you reminded us of La Doña, there has never been such a beautiful woman on screen.  Her first mexican movies made in the forties, in the stark, realistic style of those years, when there was no photo-shop or any other "improving" technique, still show us a woman so sensuous, magnetic and at the same time so free, that her powerful image was that of a cougar or in this case, a jaguar.  Her appeal was not restricted to younger men.  Male specimens of all ages went mad for her.  Probably, only "la Dietrich" was in her category, but Marlene was an ice queen & Maria was like white heat.  She died almost seven years ago on her birthday, in her bed surrounded by her favourite things, in her exotic mexican home.  She is still missed, at least south of the Rio Grande & in France.  A unique woman.
