Obama in a Box of His Own Making, by Liz Peek

Hi! Your idea about Medicaid is completely right- but it’s far too simple to use an existing bureaucracy. As mentioned- this is about Making History! Thanks for being part of the conversation- Liz

Deber- you are on your game, as always. I hope this trial doesn’t dissolve into a circus- what a horror that would be for all the families. Thank you so much for wiritng in! Best -Liz

Hi Phyllis- I think you make a good point- the Dems are not a cohesive voice on this legislation, but in the House they certainly turned out. The Blue Dogs pretty much evaporated. Look- we are all concerned about providing medical care for those who cannot afford it- it’s a queston of how best to go about it. I think a more incremental approach would have been better- focusing on free clinics, a food-stamp like program for catastrophic problems and other things I’ve written about. It’s the scale, complexity and bureaucracy I oppose- as well as the terrible cost at this point in time. Thanks for weighing in!-Liz

Hi True Grit- you are so right about the polls. They just underline my mantra: Americans are not stupid!!! And any government that treats them as such will not last long. All the best - Liz

Thank you Leigh - I’m so afraid that Americans have tuned out on the healthcare debate - they no longer trust any of the discourse- and who can blame them. The sad news is that the Dems HAVE to pass a bill- and it is truly going to be a mess, from every standpoint. I am sypathetic that Obama ran into a fiscal disaster, but he needs to govern accordingly! All the best - Liz

Hi Barbara - thanks for this. I agree about the fraud- how refreshing if the administration would have said - ok- year one, we will prove how effective we can be by eliminating or at least drastically reducing fraud. That would have been so reassuring- and so constructive. BTW, there’s an article in the new Business Week (I think that’s where I saw it) about how companies are going after fraud in health programs - and how much they are able to save. This is not about controlling costs, unfortunately, but about Making History. Thanks for you very nice post! - Liz

Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

Hi Deber- I love your passion! I have come across so many people who voted for Obama and now are regretting it. I think people were fooled by his message of harmony, and disgusted by all the aggressive divisiveness. Don’t we all hope for a president who really is open to compromise, who does govern for the majority? I wrote a piece for Fox called "Who’s Pulling Obama’s Strings?" that you might find of interest. Obama fans have to either admit that Obama the campaigner was insincere, or that he is being manipulated by Axelrod and Emmanuel; the same charge, if you recall, was levied against Bush vs. Cheney and Rove. This is a narrative I see building- and it will be damaging. It will portray the pres as weak and easily manipulated. Not good for him, and really not good for the U.S. On that note - Cheers! - Liz

Liz Peek: Obama Deaf to Election Warning But May Get Bailed Out

Thanks DL - for your perspective. But really, why all this time on the rightful owners of the mess we’re in? Obama isn’t responsible for the financial meltdown - but he does have to deal with the economy he inherited - that he inherited with great enthusiasm. (He did want to become president, right?) The focus today should be 1) how to rebuild our economy 2) how to attract business spending 3) how to improve our competitive advantages. My concern is that the Obama administration is so beholden to labor unions (hence Andy Stern being the most frequent White House visitor) that we are going to try to create jobs while simultaneously weakening businesses. The healthcare bill really does add taxes to small businesses - that is a fact, the cap and trade bill is even more burdensome. These agenda items are further clouding an uncertain future. In short, we cannot afford them! Best - Liz Peek

Dear Helen- there was an excellent article in today’s New York Times about the lobbyists and "special interests" donating money to - guess who? - Nancy Pelosi. There is no "They" who are "allowing" businesses" to outsource: U.S. commerce would have taken an even greater plunge if our companies could not take advantage of low labor rates elsewhere. Our companies cannot possibly compete with others around the globe unless we have comparable costs of production. Thankfully there are other realms where we can compete- such as those reliant on intellectual capital. For example, software design and engineering. You cannot legislate against shifting "comparative advantage" - nor can you isolate the U.S, against international trade. Nor would you want to. Thanks for posting - Liz Peek

Sinking Dollar Fair Warning to Obama, by Liz Peek

Dear Glenda Glynn- Good post, indeed. Check out Peggy Noonan’s piece in the WSJ today on Afghanistan- very thoughtful call for Congressional hearings, which seems totally appropriate. If Obama doesn’t commit to a "surge" he will be governing by the polls. Even in his darkest hours, Bush NEVER commited that sin. Elsewhere, the stupidest foreign policy fiasco we’ve produced is the situation in Honduras, where our government is opposing a free election - in order to save democracy. It makes me want to put my head through the wall! Thanks for weighing in- Liz

Hi Kathy Lee- Do you think SNL is at the leading edge of public opinon? I thought their razzing of the pres was an interesting barometer that the lustre is wearing thin. HOw about you? All the best - Liz

Sinking Dollar Fair Warning to Obama, by Liz Peek

Hi Deber! YOu are right on the money as usual! The President’s approval ratings reflect this country’s continued strong belief in self-reliance, and conviction that the government should play a limited role. Winning the Nobel prize reminds us of parallels - a good many of them - between Jimmy carter and Obama- light resume, naivete, big-government bias. Carter only served one term before Americans had had enough of being embarrassed on the world stage; let us hope that this president learns from that lesson. All the best- and genuine thanks for your valued contributions to this site! - Liz

Summing the Summits: More Splendid Speeches, by Liz Peek

Dear Leigh- this is an excellent summary of "the other view." It worries me that people have embraced the alarums about climate change with utter faith, and that most people dismiss skepticism of the cimate change industry’s claims as the rantings of lunatics. The truth is a many of the projections about future damage to the planet are highly dubious computer-generated simulations- not unlike the projections spun out by those who claimed that they were "avoiding risk" in the financial markets. My view is that there is, indeed, an entire industry now built on the premise that the earth is cooling, and that there are enormous vested interests that need to keep people as scared as possible. At the end of the day, I see no harm in trying to clean up our water and air; certainly in many parts of the world (even in the US) industrial pollution is unhealthy and should be conquered. However, the broad-based cap and trade approach is like taking a bulldozer to work out the wrinkle in a sheet- too broad-based, too expensive and at the end, unmanageable. Thank you so much for sharing this! Best - Liz

Summing the Summits: More Splendid Speeches, by Liz Peek

Oh Deber B- you are such a breath of fresh air! I’m waiting for someone to question whether the intelligence on this supposed bomber came through "illegal" taps! If you read the NYT this morning  (or maybe it was yesterdya) you’ll note the snide remarks suggesting that previous terrorist alerts were conjured out of thin air to excuse the Bush group’s violations of human rights. really, it is too much. The intriguing questions is, how long can the Obama team keep flaying the prior guy to make this one look good? One year? Two? Will he eventually be measured on his own account, and not just as the antidote to the dreaded Bush? We’ll see! Thanks - all the best - Liz
