Liz Smith: The Importance of Angelina Jolie

Lipstick Gala, I believe that your intense anger has nothing to do with Angelina Jolie or the children she has adopted. My wish is for you to find a place of centered calm so you can begin to deal with your anger, instead of spewing it against a woman who is truly a giving, loving spirit. May I ask if you have traveled to any of the poorest of the poor foreign nations? If you have not, you cannot fathom the poverty. This country truly is rich beyond compare. Yes, we have needy, hungry, homeless, but I submit that Brad and Angelina have given much of themselves and their money to Make It Right. http://www.makeitrightnola.org/ Instead of adopting a child from New Orleans, they are making it better for many children in that city. As for other countries coming to our aid, I recall that many foreign nations contributed to us after 9/11. I have not gone on the web to find support for that statement, so I ask forgiveness for making a statement I have not given documentation for. Just my memory.

What can you say after the age of 40 that you couldn't say before?

What the hell, I’ll tell one fun thing I did. Out at dinner with friends one evening, a small group of young men was at the next table. One of the precious boys kept looking at me all evening. As we were leaving, I walked near him and in a low voice that only his friends could hear, I said, “honey, I *am* your biggest fantasy” then turned and walked out. The look on his face and the faces of his friends was absolutely priceless, and I can guarantee you they are still teasing him about it. Ahhhh, the older sophisticated woman fantasy was alive and well that night. It’s just a good thing he didn’t see me on a jeans & sweatshirt night.

I embraced my previously subdued and wonderfully wicked sense of humour. Saying NO to requests to be on boards and committees for charitable events is still something I am striving for. Maybe when I turn 60…probably not.

The Emmys are on Sunday. What is your favorite part of the ceremony?

Amen! I’d give up my dishwasher before I’d give up Tivo!

Some of my favourite articles of clothing are things I’ve “rescued” from great estate sales. I have a beautiful mint condition mink stole that I purchased at a sale for a whole $5! An embroidered signature inside let me know the lady who had treasured it was named Angel. I feel as though I rescue old treasures and help them live to party another evening. The one item that always gets raves is a red faille 3/4 swing jacket from the 40’s that was $7.50. Then there’s the collection of evening bags that I wish could talk. Kelly, we could have a ball shopping.

I have a 62 in HDTV, and can’t live without Boston Legal, Bill Maher, The Tudors and now the new True Blood. Another tv addict here, Dona.

Palin Disinvited From Anti-Iran Rally at U.N. After Clinton Pullout

Oh, I believe that’s exactly what Hillary did. Upon finding that Gov. Palin was invited, Senator Clinton withdrew to avoid it becoming a political event.

Joan Ganz Cooney's Wild Side

Absolutely! I’ve always told my daughter to keep in mind that a man who can make you laugh and laugh with you is worth his weight in diamonds.

Jane Green: 'Are We Raising a Bunch of Narcissists?'

Upon entering a restaurant, the questions used to be “how many in your party” and “smoking or no smoking”. I always wanted to be asked “children or no children”.

Mary Wells: Tasty Temptations for Under the Tree

I’ll trade you a recipe or two for your chocolate truffle recipe! I like to make apple butter and jams to give as gifts. Yum!

Tonight! wowOwow Reader Forum on Charlie Gibson's 20/20 Interview with Sarah Palin

Ok, the minder thing where people sit in on interviews is the final straw!!! Didn’t we just get through the Beijing Olymipcs where the US slammed them for controlling the citizenry? What the hell do they think this is? I would like an explanation from the McCain/Palin supporters on the site as to why this is acceptable?

Texans Prepare for Hurricane Ike; Many Won't Evacuate

So very happy y’all are fine! I was so tied up with my family in Houston and a bit north, that I didn’t get here to check on y’all. You know that if it ever happens again, just pack a toothbrush and head north. I’ll take care of you.

And that was one of the things that I found so irritating. It’s a first year speech student tactic that stalls for time, like repeating the question. It also sounded disingenuous.

What are your thoughts on father-daughter purity balls?

Frankly, I don’t believe in virginity at marriage. Sex is a very important part of any relationship, and something far too critical to “wait and see” if you are compatible. Hopefully a couple discusses basic beliefs, where to live, careers, politics (one would hope), finances, children, hopes and dreams, etc. in order to make an informed choice of a life partner, but sex is left til it’s too late? Nope…not for me.
