My Comments (22 so far…)

The Memory Keepers, by Michele Neff Hernandez

Thanks, Michele, for your touching story about your husband and his shoes!  And Joan I agree that we all should tell our stories, for our own benefit as well as for others.  Here is a website that some may find useful http://therememberingsite.org (I am in no way affiliated with the site, but think it might be useful for anyone who wants to tell their story but doesn’t know how to get started.).

What is your favorite possession?

My books, my photographs (and I guess my computer, since many of the photographs are now there only), and my view. I have recently moved back to the water after many years inland and I am loving it!

Joan Juliet Buck: 'I Was Born With Eleven Toes'

I have struggled with pretty shoes and pain all of my life! Finally I have come to a point where comfort reigns supreme. Thanks for sharing your story.

What is the first thing you hear each morning?

I wake up early and the first thing I notice is the quiet. It is the one time of the day when I am not being bombarded by sound (of my own or someone else’s making) and I relish it.

How do you feel time alters your ability to be resilient in your life?

I don’t think of myself as a resilient person, but have been dealt a few blows in life (as have we all) and have come out the other side … so I guess maybe I am. Marlo, I agree that sometimes you have to just run your own race. And I just finished reading The Right Words At The Right Time, and they all were. Thanks!

How do you feel about being left alone for a few days? What do you do with the time?

Have always been a loner by nature and as an only child learned at an early age how to entertain myself. When single I could, and often did, go for days without talking to a soul and be quite content. No longer single for many years, I still need time alone, but have learned to love the comfort of having someone you love just “be” there.

Whoopi: 'Ma, Don't Freak Out. But, Yes, This Is Marlon Brando'

Thanks for these stories, ladies. Glorious, but I did like Joan’s best.

What routine medical procedure scares you the most?

Its the trip to the dentist I dread!

Have you ever experienced sex discrimination? If so, what did you do about it?

In the early 70’s I worked for a large national company that would not hire women as branch managers, the reason being that moving around the country was part of the job and women would not be willing to do that. They of course didn’t bother actually asking any women!

What do you consider to be the new seven deadly sins?

All the lists are great. I would keep the original seven and add indifference. And, Judith, I love the way you think.

"South Pacific" returns to Broadway — what musical comedy from your or your parent's youth still resonates with you today?

The first musical I saw on Broadway, on my first trip to NY, was The Wiz. But the one that stays with me still is A Chorus Line. I wore that tape (was it that long ago?) out. It’s the same guilty pleasure that makes me watch Project Runway, Top Chef, etc ….. the enjoyment of watching people create whatever it is that they are good at.

New study suggests cell phones double risk of brain cancer; Will you cut back usage?

Even though my cell is my only phone now… no land line, it would be hard to cut back since I hardly use it anyway. Especially in public. What people will say in a crowded store while on the phone never ceases to amaze me.

'We Just Don't Elect Presidents We Don't Like'

Thanks, Laurie. Molly Ivins rocked!

Life in the Little Lane: Edith Ann on Friend Refills

Edith Ann, you are correct. Friend refills are hard to find. You will always want to cherish the great friends you knew. The great thing about friends, though, is you just never know where you might find a new, extra special one. They do tend to appear in the most unexpected places. Just keep looking.
