Lesley Stahl, Candice Bergen, Liz Smith and the wOw Women Hail Their Favorite First Ladies

I’m not a Cokie (Kooky) Roberts fan either, but I’ve heard that her book about the Founding Mothers is good. Moving forward a century or so, Eleanor Clift’s book “Founding Sisters” is excellent. It’s about the fight for women’s right to vote. Unbelievable what those women went through. None of us should ever skip a vote!

Skip Joan of Arc and read about Abigail, unless you admire truly mad, religious zealots!

I’m currently reading “The Letters of Eleanor and Anna Roosevelt: Mother and Daughter.” In one of her letters to Anna, Eleanor tells her how much she likes Madame Chiang but adds “Pa is a little afraid of her.” Fascinating!

Great list. Great reasons. I’d add Abigail Adams. She kept John sane. And she warned him, when he and his comrades were drafting the constitution, to “remember the ladies or we will forment a rebellion.” And we did!

Liz Smith's Top 22

Liz, I can’t decide whether you are eclectic or just plain contradictory.

Judith Martin's Sharp Point of View

Well, I’m not an admirer of Becky Sharp, but I love your witty response about her being/acting contemporary.

Talk to Tom Brokaw! The Author of Boom! Takes Questions From Our Readers

I thoroughly dislike TV hosts who ask their guest a question and then don’t allow them to answer because they proceed to answer the question themselves or interrupt constantly. However I have been disappointed in what seems to be your “hands-off” approach on “Meet the Press.” You have allowed guests to go on and on, hogging the time of the opposing side. Don’t you, as moderator, have some obligation to step in, from time-to-time, in order to give both sides somewhat equal time? I really don’t want to listen to a rant by one side only, regardless of the side.

Who won round 2 of the presidential debates last night?

Not exciting but quite substantive. Not a true town hall format. McCain should never get on a stage with Obama. He looks old to Obama’s youth; he look cranky to Obama’s debonaire air; he looks tired to Obama’s energy. In fact, McCain should never get on a stage with Palin. He looks like her father. But, who won the debate? Obama did both on style (previous comments) and substance. He answered questions more directly and did especially well on defending and explaining his health care plan. He needs to sharpen his answer about Georgia and about the threat of Russia.

Tina Fey Nails Palin. Again. Saturday Night Live Interview Skit with Amy Poehler as Katie Couric (VIDEOS)

Tina Fey is so good that I now don’t know if Tina is channeling Sarah or Sarah is channeling Tina. Your question - “Is Tina Fey good?” She’s wonderful! I’m going to watch “30 Rock” this season. However Amy doesn’t do Katie very well. Almost spoiled the skit. She’s much better when she plays Hillary. As to the clip about Henry Kissinger, why would anyone reference him as an authorative source? Name one thing he got right. I guess people are invited to say anything they want in these blogs, and that’s okay; but I wish they would at least stick to the topic and save their other wide ranging thoughts for another time and place.

50 Sexiest Men Over 50: wowOwow's 2008 50-Over-50 List (Photos)

The pictures of these guys are very uneven. Some pictures show the men in flattering poses; others in unflattering. If we are suppose to pick from the pictures, that’s a different story than picking from what I’ve seen of them in other pictures and other media. But most of the picks are pretty strange!

'Battle in Seattle': A Movie About a 1999 Riot You Probably Never Heard About

Guess all the staff at WOW is eastcoast. Lots of people in Seattle heard about this riot!

Joan Ganz Cooney on the Real Reason Obama Didn't Choose Hillary

I totally agree. We must get behind the ticket we have, and Biden is a good man, even though I would have preferred Hillary. Maybe Bill’s financial history would have been an insurmountable problem. We’ll never know. I always heard that Obama couldnt’ choose Hillary because she would energize the Republican base. LOL - I think Palin did that in spades and probably would not have gotten on the ticket if Hillary had been Obama’s pick. What I’m pretty sure of is that what the nation seems to want now is leadership, and leadership more than change. I think Hillary projects that quality more than Barak. But that’s ancient history. What can Obama do to project this quality?

Liz Smith: Oh My Foes and Oh My Friends!

And Edna St. Vincent Millay’s candle did not last the night but, Liz. are you implying that Sarah’s candle gives a lovely light? I’d have to disagree with you there. Certainly a bolt of lightening but hardly a lovely light. That’s much too gentle a metaphor for a self-described pit bull in lipstick.

Julia Reed: From Gloria Steinem to Norah O'Donnell, Misogyny and Sexism Are Fine if the Target (Palin) Is on the Right

Exactly, in regard to the Steinem article! And Hillary has steadfastly refused to criticize Palin on personal grounds (despite the Press’ rubbing of hands over a potential “cat fight”) but has criticized her stand on issues .And why does Julia Reed expect something of Norah O’Donnell, who was so eager to be in good with the gang of MSNBC white boys that she regularly sneered at Hillary. Please! I grew up in Alberta, Canada. I understand something about the culture in which Sarah grew up, Julia. Don’t paint everyone with your broad brush proclaiming most people don’t know what it’s like in mainstream America. Why do you assume the people in the “heartland” are more “real,” more American than people in the rest of the country. I thought we were all Americans. And why do you assume that Alaska is a more real place than Hawaii? I thought Hawaii had been admitted to the Union the same year that Alaska was. And have you heard about that organization in Alaska that Mr. Palin and, perhaps, Sarah, belonged to that wants to secede from the U.S.? And so, you, who make your living writing about the perfect cocktail, want to dump on community organizers too? Seems to me that a community organizer is pretty close to the “real” people you think Palin is so close to. Remember: Jesus was a community organizer. Pontius Pilate was a governor.
