Definitely the age of glitz is over, but rich? They’ve already made their billions. Even if their portfolios are off 40% they have sacks of the stuff. The difference is that their shopping will be covert ops. LOL, Joan, on the joke about being thin for lack of food! Except the truth is, the cheapest food is the most fattening - hence the obesity rates in Arkansas and Alabama.

I just got done picking up trash in Crown Heights as a result of an email from Michelle Obama emphasizing that this is National Service Day and including a link to all kinds of service events in my area. I take this as a hopeful sign - Americans coming together to help each other and conserve, as they did in 1944-5.

Deburca, I agree with you about gold. But it’s high-risk, and muni bonds, as Liz pointed out, are historically pretty safe. That said, I think gold will go up again, even to the $1000 high. But I’m a gambler, and investors looking into munis are in no mood to gamble. I’m into munis as well as gold.

How are you planning to mark the Inauguration?

I believe Michelle Obama has asked us to perform some public service that day in honor of Dr. King so I’ll be doing that (while Tivo’ing the inauguration)
