Do you watch 'live' television anymore?

I have the TV on a lot of the time, but don’t watch it unless something attracts my attention. I seldom, if ever, watch network TV, as find most of it boring and time wasting. Sometimes I actually do click on the kazillion channels we get on cable & find it all a huge wasteland. I wouldn’t want to be without it though, as occasionally there are worthwhile things to watch. I do have to admit to doing exercises when Letterman is on, and a lot of the time that is "oh, good grief!!"

A Few Words About One Word, by Margo Howard

I received a gleeful email today, which I immediately deleted, of an itinerary of sorts of his earlier life and the terrible things he did then, with a big emphasis on Chappaquiddick, which was, of course, terrible. I am sure this has been something that has haunted him his entire life. All of these things must have played heavy on his mind and heart as he grew and matured to what he ultimately became.  What can one do, but try to make up for their very misspent earlier days than to try to live life to its fullest and try  to possibly erase some of the misdeeds by doing for others as much as one can. He did just that and gained some modicum of respect for all he did do. It’s too bad that the day after his burial this sort of email is circulating.

Has there ever been a presidential election wherein you didn't exercise your right to vote?

Well, I am old. I cast my first vote for  Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. Probably most of you weren’t even born or just little kids. I was so excited to be able to vote. I have voted in every election since then…like some who won, disliked others, but never hated anybody who was our president…always had respect for the office. Also, my husband being military, the president was US6, meaning their top commanding officer.

Sarah Palin and the Celebrity of Politics

What you say is quite true. People listen to all that is said and believe it in full without even bothering to find out the validity of it. I cannot believe the naivety of our population in general. If what they believe in is pointed out to be false, with facts to back it up, they will still listen to those who will scare them into their belief. It all reminds me of a long, long ago radio broadcast put on by Orson Wells, where he made the people believe that Martians had taken over the country. He made it so realistic that people were panicking….or maybe "The Emperor’s New Clothes"could be another example. If people operate on this mob mentality of belief in anything they are told - true or not - I fear for the future of our country.

Sarah Palin and the Celebrity of Politics

Well, I’m old, but still have been working today. I come home to read the same tired old comments re the same boring person from the same people. My question is - don’t you people have anything more to do than sit at your computer all day throwing barbs at each other, which have already been said over/over/over? "So, Mommie, what did you do today?"……"Why, I sat at my computer and fought with the enemy."  Long ago I gave my opinion of Sarah. What’s the point of saying more? Will we ever agree on anything anymore, or is this country being destroyed by all the anger that is and has been going on?

Do you think ground combat positions in the armed forces should be open to women?

Mu husband is a retired Marine Corps officer. He has no objection to women in combat, however he said if the enemy saw women firing at them it would be a considerable problem. If any were captured they would be raped/tortured in the worst way. Also, there is this…woman are generally smaller than men, they urinate differently, they have periods and PMS(whether we want to admit it or not), so immediately they face propblems that men do not, which would be difficult in a combat situation. There is still the problem of rape of the women, which is quite often covered up, but it exists. Sexual activity takes place, often resulting in pregnacy, so these situations now exist with the mingling of women and men soldiers. My only objection to women in the military are the women who enlist when they have small children and leave them in care of others. I don’t think mothers should ever abandon their children, and it happens a lot.

Which season is your favorite?

Since I live in Az. winter is the best time of the year. The weather is usually lovely, and I am happy to live in a resort place where others come and pay to escape the cold. Then, of course, there are the summers, about which it has been said "even Satan won’t vacation here."

Caption This!

Cause The house was on fire and  my children were burned…..sob.

Coming Soon: The Death of the American Lawn

Hey, a small patch of it looks good in the heat of AZ, in the middle of your rock yard, when it never gets cold anyway. You can look at it and say…"I remember grass."

Coming Soon: The Death of the American Lawn

We live in AZ and our yard is rocks with large river rocks, and small boulders placed at various places Sounds terrible, but it actually is very attractive with desert plants placed at various spots in the yard, 4 Palm trees & one lovely Mesquite tree. We have a small area in our back yard that has fake grass in it and it looks quite attractive..and just like a well tended lawn. This is very di rigueur for AZ, but do think there are more grass lawns in Phoenix than there are here.

What passage or passages from a book, poem, short story or other literary work moved you so much that you've never forgotten it?

A line from a poem of old favorite of mine from the 70s, Rod McKuen. It rather puts things in perspective if I start to grumble.  " All your days can’t be sunshine bright, all your nights something to remember."

Which environmental assault is your skin most affected by?

Yeah, we get UV exposure, so we’re getting sun damage when we have that, and the air is probably polluted along with that….HUH?

The New Text-Messaging Guidelines, by Sybil Adelman Sage

I saw this program recently about high school. The bell rang to change classes, the kids came out of the classroom all with their cell phones, either texting or talking. It looked so creepy and almost sad to see the total lack of of any conversations or joking about as in the old days. Have cells phones taken the joy out of life for the young? Is talking or texting all there is any longer?

Should Cash for Clunkers be given for foreign cars? Why or why not?

I drive a foreign car, but a late model. However it’s made in the United States. If they want to support this & give the car dealers a boost - why not?

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock music festival. Did you go? If you didn't what did you feel about it?

I already answered under Whoopie’s post, but will repeat it here. If you were a parent of teen agers during that period it was sheer hell. Sex, drugs, rock & roll - they really took their toll. My "hippie" kids & I did not ever see eye to eye!
