AARP's Health-Care Stance Stirs Controversy Among Members; Obama to Set Record Straight at NH Town Hall Meeting

I happened upon the whole town hall on C-Span.  Con. Frank answered the questions succinctly, and I didn’t realize that "Nazi" girl had quite a long statement with the question, and throughout her time on the floor, Frank listened politely and quietly.  Then, he let go with his zinger, and proceeded on with the next questioner and the town hall.  The media led me to believe Nazi-Girl was at the end of the meeting, but it went on a good 15 minutes after that.  He handled it the same way I saw Elie Wiesel handle a similar situation once when, during the Q&A, someone asked him what his response was to people who insisted the Holocaust didn’t happen.  Mr. Wiesel looked at the questioner and said, "some things don’t bear discussion."  Then, he went to the next questioner.  And, I think that is the only way to handle these types.

Leigh, what part of the government do you not approve of?  The military?  Even Rush Limbaugh has approved of the way the military works.  The Business Cycle?  We used to have strict regulations in that segment, until they started being stripped away in the 80’s.  Now, we are all living through the consequences of a corrupt and un-regulated business sector.  Perhaps, you object to the public health programs of the National Institues of Health, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and your state and local health department.  I suspect you are much too young to remember the scourge of Polio, Thyphoid, Diphtheria and Rubella, but I’m not.  I remember the terror that would spread through communities when there were outbreaks of these diseases.  I remember the nurses coming to the schools and innoculating us.  I remember quarantines and TB spreading through entire counties in Eastern Ky.  Do you dislike the Interstate System.  It is a "government" system, started by President Eisenhower.  It is the backbone of our commercial and is ever so much safer than the two lane roads we used to have to travel on.  Federal Deposit Insurance—now there’s a government run system that I guess you also dislike.  In bad times such as these, it prevents "runs" on banks and we have recently seen it effectiveness because depositors funds were protected.  What about Law Enforcement, both State & Local?  Shall we just get rid of them?  What about Air Traffic Control, as well as safety regulations for airplanes?    You are obviously too young to require Social Security and Medicare.  But, there will come a day when you will use them unless you are so against government, you decide to perhaps donate them to other places in the event you don’t need them.  BTW,  there is a myth floating around:  no,  Medicare is not on the verge of bankruptcy.  It will be there.  But in this post, I am still interested in which part of government you don’t like.  The GIBill for Veterans, perhaps?  This is how millions and millions of vets were educated following WW2, as well as well as soldiers in the following wars.  This is the bill that changed college education forever in the US and forged the way for the creation of the middle class.  This is the bill from which we gained our scientists and engineers that helped our nation move forward.  I am a Realtor, and I can tell you that I know and have clients that are forever thankful for the FHA programs that help 46% of Americans own their homes.  As for other government involvements, are you objecting to Consumer Protection, Anti-Discrimination Policies & Laws, Clean Water & Clean Air Programs, Workplace Safety, the National Weather Service(it’s hurricane season; I bet you are keeping an eye on weather.com)?  Have you taken advantage of Student Loans and Financial Aid Programs?  Food & Safety Programs? Cancer Research and Epidemics Research?    And, a final question, if you do not approve of all these programs which we depend upon, just how do you plan to privatize them?

Coming Soon: The Death of the American Lawn

I do garden lectures as a Master Gardner in my community.  I have said for years that the less cultivated grass we have, the better our environment will be.  So many places use chemicals to make grass lush and green.  All that forms in runoff and ends up in our waterways.  Not good for us, for animals and certainly not good for the fish and water fowl.  There are so many alternatives to a perfect green yard.  And,  besides,  grass is so labor intensive. How many people really want to spend their Saturday or Sunday morning cutting the grass?  Besides, most people water it all wrong and fertilize too much at the wrong seasons of the year.  I would love to have just enough grass to use a push mower and have the rest in interesting areas to sit, visit and relax.  For the money it takes to care for the darned grass, one can get a lovely tree.

Should Cash for Clunkers be given for foreign cars? Why or why not?

Well, I guess that answers that question.  I mean the object of this whole endeavor is to put people back to work, isn’t it.

Women in Uniform in Iraq, Afghanistan, Prove They're Assets in Combat Zones

Wendy, that just may work in the workplace with over eager male co-workers… :-)

Women in Uniform in Iraq, Afghanistan, Prove They're Assets in Combat Zones

Thank you, Lila.  I have always wondered about that, and I am glad to know this.  Most soldiers leave the military in good shape, and it affords them a great way to advance themselves through educational benefits.  So,  I gather that a single mom with no one to take care of her offspring can’t just join without a plan.  Right?  This is the main reason I have struggled with this issue.  On the other hand, women while not in combat, played a very important role in WW2; indeed I’ve had acquaintences that flew planes back then.

wOw Reports: The Best News of the Week – From YOU!

You bring up a good point, SG.  Did you happen to hear Morning Edition this a.m.?  They did a segment about how the British Health System has been mis-represented by Fox News and others, and how it’s been updated.  It really disturbed me, because if people want to discuss issues, they should at least be up to date on all sides of a subject, and not just listen to one source.

http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2009/08/britains_health_service_defend.html   NPR just updated their website recently, and I am still not familiar enough with it to put the actual broadcast here, but this ought to point you in the correct direction.  You can hear the segment, and I would like to hear your reaction to it…
