A recession economy does not mean you can't afford Christmas. What's your best (and cheapest) do-it-yourself gift idea?

I just spent the last year learning glass fusing. Giving gifts that I have made will be the norm from now on.

We know times are tough, but what will you still treat yourself to?

My animals care is something that I cannot give up. And with some of them being elderly, costs can mount up quickly. But that is the cost of living with animals I love. I would do without to provide for them.

What would you most want to be described as?

Kryssi, now you have taken Soy out, what are you eating? How long have you been Veg?

No Bailout for Detroit? What Happens to Your American Car? by Jennifer Openshaw

Why is it the consumer is taking the real brunt of this deal? I agree that as we get older we do not need or want to keep up with the latest trend. Your mom should be able to have a reliable car that gets her from point a to point b without costing a fortune. It amazes me that we have not designed a good looking economical car that lasts. This just burns me that we are paying for their jets and helicopters and they want us to keep paying!

No Bailout for Detroit? What Happens to Your American Car? by Jennifer Openshaw

After a lifetime of passion for the auto, I now have a different take on this issue than I did before. We should not bail out what is going to keep us on the same path we have been on. They knew in the 70’s that we had a problem. Why the makers ignored that need is why we have vehicles that still horrible gas mileage. We also have to consider the repair charges on the vehicles that are being made now. I just replace my transmission on my Ford that was 2000 miles over the warranty. Had I not purchased the extended it would have cost me $5000. My sons car needed to have the catalytic converter on his Contour and that was to cost $3000 since they have two! How can we keep up with those kind of costs? You look at the design of most of our cars they are so integrated that if you have a small fender bender it takes out the panels with it. No wonder insurance is so costly. I used to love to drive and that joy is gone. The stories I have heard about the inventions that have been squelched on autos that would run with so many different fuel sources is amazing. We are smarter than what we have been producing. And for the first time in my life I would consider another manufacturer than our own US made. Although the lines are fuzzy now as to what is made where!

Has there ever been a time you thought you were going to lose it on an airplane?

Donna, you just reminded me of a passenger nightmare. I had a guy behind me that kept kicking my seat for hours. I had a migraine headache. We all know how far back the seats go in coach using the recline. (2 inches) He obviously felt I was getting into his space when he yelled he had long legs and needed that space. He was with his parents (an adult himself) who proceeded to berate me for wanting to use the recline! He was the most rude person I ever encountered on a flight. Had I not felt so poor I would have got the flight attendant involved. Might have been a lost it moment prevented! Amazing how others can make a pleasant flight miserable. Glad you go to move.

Has there ever been a time you thought you were going to lose it on an airplane?

I agree only mine was my breakfast! I also lost my wallet when in a flight from England to NY I fell asleep and got my pocket picked. Landed in NY with not a cent but they found the wallet on the plane.

What media hoax or lie are you still trying to get over?

Hey Carol J, you are correct. We are even guessing that it would not air. I might have you join you in the ranks of not watching.

What media hoax or lie are you still trying to get over?

I am reeling from a hoax that took place yesterday. I took three of my friends to the Oprah show. I was told that the show was a surprise. Of course all the way to the show we speculated who would be there or what the show would be about. Our enthusiasm for seeing the newly elected President was top of the list. Of course we had some ideas of what we hoped would not be on the show but they were quickly displaced by the happy thoughts of what could come. When we entered the studio, all the decorations indicated that we were going to see the Oprah favorites things show. How exciting! The audience was filled with joy, even though the Have a Thrifty Holiday was the theme. The premise was really great. We could now concentrate on what was really important in life and prepare to share ideas on how to enjoy the holidays without spending a great deal of money. Knowing that several of us took off of work, paid $25 for parking (its Chicago you know!) and spent hours waiting for the person so many of us admired. We spent almost an hour getting upbeat to prepare for the show. The warm up person was great. We exchanged ideas on how we could be frugal this holiday season and get to the core of why we celebrate. Then Oprah came out and very shortly the mood changed. She said this was not to be what we expected! This show is suppose to air the day before Thanksgiving. And for those of you who wished you could have been there, this show will make you Thankful you weren’t. This was her chance to really show the true meaning of life, but it just proved to me how depressing things are. By the time the three hundred people left the studio, there were non of the smiles that appear upon entering the show. This truly felt like a bait and switch. We did not need to go home with stuff, but we did need to go home with hope and joy. I would love this site to put up a section on how people will be enjoying the coming holiday season. Please help me believe that we as creative people, can still see things positively without spending gobs of money. A nine hour hoax! parsimonious peggy

The Happy Birthday, Whoopi! Reader Forum

May you celebrate with great joy. Happy your day!

What magazine cover would you most like to appear on? Why?

I would like to be on the cover of O. Of course since Oprah has to be on the cover, I would be with her. Would not mind seeing her on the cover with her friends. Preferably I would like my work on the cover of American Art Collector.

What's next for Sarah Palin?

Talk show would be my guess and that way I could turn off the program in the same way I never watch Jerry Springer. Ratings would hopefully show her she has no audience. Whoops, do people really watch JS?
