Joan Ganz Cooney Couldn't Breathe Until Her Stepson Smiled Again

When my kids are hurting or going through tough times I just go crazy!  There is nothing as fierce as that love to help or protect a child - no matter their age.

The wOw Conversation: Why Do People Put Up With Abuse?

I too was raised with abouse, both physical and verbal and mental as well…from my other with my dad turning a blind eye to the whole mess.  The bad thing was that all the family and friends never supported the five of us and we all felt it was probably our fault.  We five have come out very disfunctional - at best.  I spent so many years in therapy.  I have dealt with depression, but it was learned from mom not inherited.

I agree.  We never forget, but we can and with help often unlearn (So as not to pass it  on!) and come out stronger.  I did.

Jeannot,  I am so sorry…So many say that insurance is the answer but it doesn’t work for so many whether it’s because of cost or that we do not qualify because of a given disease we have. I’ve heard it said that we haven’t a right to health care…I hope they’re wrong or after this economic mess many of us through no fault of our own will loose a generation because there will not be enough money to help to keep normal middle Americans from falling into poverty.

Didn’t finish, sorry - they were both maybe 120 pounds dripping wet all their lives.

Andrea,

That’s funny - about obesity and diabetes being a predictor that is.  Both my mother and grandmother were the thinest members of their family.  With some, it simply is family related.

Frustrating isn’t it?  When everyone tells you that you cna get the insurance and it really is out of reach for some of us.  Before people say anything they need to walk around in our shoes to see what really is going on!

Oh, and though I looked, the price here in Michigan is no where near $1100 a month for that kind of insurance.

Constance,

Even that amount with me out of work, and my hubby dealing with the major repercussions from an accident last December we can’t, and if I’m honest we really couldn’t back in our early 50s.  Thanks for the clarification, but we just cannot afford it. The Internet we have because of my search for freelance work since at 58 there isn’t many regular jobs open to me.

When the insurance was being touted as the answer for aging parents we were already over 55 years old, and I hadn’t had a job/career for over 5 years so that certainly leaves us out.

If we tried to pay $1100 a month for any bill we would loose everything.  Thanks, Constance.

Are you satisfied with Bernie Madoff's sentence of 150 years in prison?

Were you looking at all our washed out streets!?  Just kidding.

But if there is no money, longterm care is out of the question.

My grandmother and Mom were haunted by this dread disease, so I will take time to watch tonight.
