What isn't – but should be – one of the wonders of the world?

Then again, the question stated “modern world”. The ASCE has it’s own list To which I would add the Three Gorges Dam and the International Space Station.

I will second the Grand Canyon.

Liz Smith: President Is a 'Thankless Job'

I agree with you on all three points, Amanda.

A sample size of 1000, from a population of 300,000,000+ as diverse as ours, is insignificant. IMHO, these polls do more to influence public opinion than to measure it.

I have bailed out of the last 3-4 phone polls/surveys because the questions became increasingly biased or prejudicial. An honest survey is hard to come by.

Sonia Sotomayor's Confirmation Hearings Start Today; Many Expect Her to Dazzle

Hypothetical Situation:

I am a Jewish woman and I belong to an organization called ‘Our People’ (Ameinu)”

You ask: “What is the difference?” The difference is that the position and authority of whites has been implicit, and even explicit, throughout our history. It is the minority segments of our society that require advocacy organizations to offset that representational advantage.

Stimulus Not Working? Let's Have More! by Liz Peek

Greetings, countrywoman. I wish I could be as optimistic, but I know that FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) is a powerful propaganda weapon, and the republicans use it ruthlessly. Few people have the time, resources, and inclination to sort out the facts from the fiction. In the current environment, the republicans will be able to use fear, confusion, and frustration to advantage. Fear worked for them in 2004, and I do not care to underestimate their ability to manipulate the emotions of the electorate now. The far ‘right’ had a taste of near-complete power during Bush43, and I do not think they will ever tolerate compromise again.

Stimulus Not Working? Let's Have More! by Liz Peek

Thanks for speaking up, countrywoman. This thread does seem to be a bit of a cow patty festival.

One thing that frustrates me is that confidence is a critical factor in the recovery, and the republicans are working hard to make sure there isn’t any. It seems like they would rather have the recovery fail than have it succeed under a Democrat. Unfortunately, it is much easier to tear down than to build.

How’s your sense of humor doing these days?

Obama’s Czars Play Russian Roulette With Business, by Liz Peek

The “czars” do not set policy or evangelize ideology, they implement policies set through normal channels. It may be a good idea to have advise-and-consent on some of the more sensitive positions, but I think that is up to the Legislative Branch, not the Executive.

Advice and Consent of the Senate is not the only system of checks and balances we have, but Bush43 demonstrated how all of them can be circumvented - with widespread support from the GOP.

Margo Howard, Ann Coulter Miraculously Agree: Palin Too Big for Alaska

Dear Margo: As I see it, “knocked up” is just a slang term for pregnant. Irreverent, yes, and (in my opinion) with a connotation of carelessness. Whether or not it is offensive depends on the individual. Considering someone named their movie “Knocked Up”, a lot of people must think it is not an offensive term.

Whatever Happened to Discretion?

If you want to imply things, then lets imply that the increase has slowed since the Dems took control. 70% since 2005 but only 50% since 2006. While the article you cited refers to a few specific instances, it does not analyze which party is the most spendy.

The cost of so-called congressional delegations, known among lawmakers as “codels,” has risen nearly 70% since 2005, when an influence-peddling scandal led to a ban on travel funded by lobbyists, according to the data.

Whatever Happened to Discretion?

I looked into the whole blame-the-gays issue, and I have not seen a single legitimate news source report on it. All I have found is an article on a parody site called “The DiSCust” “Because in South Carolina, we expect more than just the truth”

This is a parody, ladies! A misrepresented, out-of-context, abused for dem-baiting parody.

The “news” on this site is not entirely real. If there is, in fact, actual news on this site, then it is likely marked as such, just so you can tell the difference. This site is news parody, but if you had to actually come to this page to figure that out then you might not catch that particular nuance even as it’s being explained to you so maybe you should just move along.

Actual people parodied/mocked on theDiscust are public figures (or dead) and therefore eligible for such treatment. Any resemblance in name or otherwise to any non-public/non-dead figure within the editorial content of this site is purely coincidental, unintentional, or you told us it would be ok. No public servants were harmed in the writing of this publication — that happened long before we came along.

theDiscust is for entertainment purposes only. Please do not source theDiscust in your news reports or thesis papers as you will likely regret it — though if you do, please send us a copy.

Whatever Happened to Discretion?

Republicans object to a nanny state, but are gung-ho for a chaperon state.
