Tanja, I’ve been reading your opinions about abortions and those who have huge regrets for choices made in the past and your willingness to take away other’s choices because of those regrets. As a 72 year old woman who has lived through the years when they were both legal and illigal, all I can say is grow up. Take responsibility for what has happened in the past and quit trying to punish those coming into adulthood now because you didn’t have the backbone to make a responsibile decision in the past. No one held a gun to your head! As for your religious convictions, more power to you, no one is going to force you to act contrary to those convictions. However it’s taken us a long time to legally own our bodies and don’t think we are going to give that up without a fight. We own our bodies, not the government, not the church, not some man down the street.

Brooklyn Gal, May I clarify your statement. The sex that leads to pregnancy is what they are trying to fill themselves up with. They babies just come, often someone yelling in their ear they have to be responsible. They do it over and over again trying to form their idea of a family. I watched a friend who did the same thing and she wasn’t a teenager. After 3 kids she just couldn’t through her head they were a family she didn’t need a man to make it so. It is just so sad. I’ve seen women with 4 or 5 kids in persuit of men just looking for that feeling of family and I’ve witnessed men take full advantage of them with no intention of making a commitment. Just a quickie!

Lady Gator,—In my case that would be 72 now. I’ve got an old boy friend from 25 years ago who is wandering around here lonely. He is 64, sorta cute, very nice, just got rid of a jealous woman after 2 years, can take care of himself and his only fault is he’ll drive you nuts trying to take care of you. He is a caretaker. Which is why we never could make it. I didn’t need or want a caretaker. Then or now.

Marjorie, I’m not excusing the delay of Federal help, there is no excuse for that. But when they finally arrived trying to wade through the maze of people who thought they were in charge and who were willing to block what you might have arrived to do, because they knew better. I said New Orleans was a wonderful place. I loved living there. It was mysterious, adventurous, it was exciting, it’s beautiful, the people are fascinating and unique, the food to die for BUT, they don’t like anybody to tell them what to do and how to do it. Period. I don’t know if after three years that has changed. We used to say, those of us who worked for an airline who had a base there, you can’t transplant a New Orleanian. They just don’t transplant. I met a family who ended all the way up here in Oregon, the summer after Katrina. My niece invited them because it was her son’s college graduation party and he had requested Louisiana chicken and dumplings and she thought they might appreciate a meal like that from home. “No pressure on me!” They were having a terrible struggle, he’d found a great job, better than he’d ever had at home. She’d found a good job, but she was so homesick she thought she was going to die. She had nothing left to go home to but lordy she wanted to go home. I remember the Xmas of 65. We had moved to Dallas, and a friend brought a couple to our house for dinner. They had just been transferred from New Orleans. That was the first time I heard the term, you can’t transplant a New Orleanian. She was talking about herself. I was told later they didn’t make it through the year. Political corruption was de rigor! The rest is almost obvious. I’m the child of a farmers daughter and if you go back far enough say 150 years, they came out here on the Oregon trail from Indiana, I didn’t know food could taste that good, homes could be that beautiful and people so mysterious and exotic. I was charmed!

Suzanne, I’ll read all this and get back to you and let you know if I agree. I was a supporter of Goldwater. He was a firm defender of States Rights. That term doesn’t even come up any more. About 1972 or 3 when the Left Be-hinders were really starting to make a lot of noise, my sister -in-law wanted me to join her church. She wanted to know what I would do when that day came? I told her I guess it would be my job to take of things here on earth. I’d just have to learn how to get through tough times and depend on myself. I wasn’t willing to put away for for such an eventuality because I was a gourmet cook so I put away basics, grain, honey, peanut butter, powdered milk, a grinder for wheat, and seed in a can. I bought some survivor books and went back to living my life. I forgot I also bottled some water. I never did get far enough ahead financially to put away dimes. Remember they were good for barter as money as well as silver. I think it took a couple of hundred dollars to get her off my back. I never did learn to shoot a gun. I guess they are still waiting. She’s long gone and I don’t know where all that stuff ended up. I left it on the last ranch we owned. Last year I read “Invasion of the Party Snatchers” by Victor Gold. Bonnie, I’d forgotten about them working together, I was just remembering the reaction to the election, maybe I was remembering what I heard here on this ——. I’ll have to re-think this. It wasn’t just the anti war people. I am a republican and I was furious when mothers of servicemen and women here in Oregon had to buy body armor for them. I couldn’t believe we had moved into Iraq unprepared. This wasn’t Afghanistan this was Iraq. That’s when it started for me. Their response to complaints about how the war was being handled made me question their judgement. I started to have the same doubts I’d had during the Vietnam War. We weren’t getting the whole story. Then I discovered they had forbidden pictures of the dead being viewed as the caskets were being removed from the transport planes. I didn’t say he couldn’t make decisions, I said he had a bunker environment in the White House. That means he didn’t want any input from anyone who disagreed with him. If he has a fault, he hasn’t any follow through. He was good at giving out jobs, he wasn’t very good at seeing if people actually did them. He also is guilty of cronyism. It doesn’t look like Obama is going to suffer from that, but only time will tell. I hope his choices so far are a reflection of his style going forward. He certainly hasn’t picked a bunch of group thinkers. Bonnie earlier on this thread I commented on the political environment of Louisiana and New Orleans in particular. Most people don’t understand that place unless they’ve spent some time there.
