What is your favorite short story of all time?

The Gift of the Magi, which I think was by O. Henry.  I think.  That story has haunted me for about 65 years now.

Pro-Life Feminism Births a Great – and Inexhaustible – Debate

The so called "pro-life" people are the real killers, and no one is fooled about this.  Every woman or girl-child deserves control of her own body and life.  That is what pro-choice is all about;  it is NOT about killing.

Have you ever switched political parties?

I was a Republican for 51 years, and then became a Democrat when my party became owned by religious fanatics who felt complelled to insert their beliefs into politics and who chose my beloved party to do it with.  So sad;  but here is one who trod much earlier the path Arlen Specter is treading now.

Rep. Virginia Foxx: Matthew Shepard Hate Crime a 'Hoax' (Video)

There is something the matter with this responding formula here in this discussion this morning.  I could not get a box to come up to write into unless I hit reply!  Tried EVERYthing, and finally wound up posting a blank!

Anyway, all I wanted to say is that it would appear we MUST have legislation for the obvious in order to get it in the brain cells of the public that ANY organized hatred toward ANY other group, be it based on race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability, country of origin, language spoken, or you-name-it, leads to frenzy about that portion of our population and eventually to such hatred that a sort of righteous individual or family murder occurs, and even genocide.  Our history as humans is SO full of this, from our beginnings right down to this day.  If we have to pass laws protecting particular groups who are suffering discrimination in a particular time period in order to highlite what is going on and make the perpetrators stop and think, then so be it.  I quite see the reasoning of those who feel murder is murder and question the need of extra laws about murder of a special group.  But hey, you people are thinking rationally and not fully appreciating the mind sets of those who have worked themselves up into (or been deliberately worked up into) a frenzey of righteous hatred.

Kathleen Sebelius Jumps Head-First Into HHS Job With Swine Flu Crisis

What a crazy, mixed-up, comic book nation this has turned into when Senators hold up a nomination for months over a religious litmus test and keep us all from having a Health Chief until the alarm goes out that we may have a world pandemic on our hands.  Wow!  Then they are ready to scurry and dump it on a woman and hope if anything goes wrong, she’ll get all the blame!

It stinks!  But at least she is in there at last!  My warmest good wishes go out to her.

Psychic Says Susan Boyle Will Be the Next Jennifer Hudson

Susan Boyle reminds me a lot of another British singer from my younger days.  Trying to remember her name!  Gracie Fields?  She retired to Capri;  I do remember that.  She was not pretty, but she entertained the troops and the nation during WWII and everyone adored her.  She did not have the great voice Susan Boyle has, but was more of a lusty variety hall singer and very funny.

How many magazine subscriptions do you have?

The one I cannot live without is my Newsweek.  There are 2 others I subscribe to at present:  National Geograpic and Vanity Fair.  I do so love them both, but they take up too much TIME to read!  Years ago I subscribed to absolutely everything, and the magazines piled up unread.  During World War II, I could not have managed without LIFE.  I get the New York Review of Books, too;  but does that count as a magazine or a newspaper?  From years of collecting piles of unread magazines,  have finally gotten through all except some British History Illustrateds, which I intend to read and send on to one of my granddaughters, who will keep them forever.

Psssssttt ... It's Joni Evans's Birthday Today! Let's Make It a wOw!

Wishing you a beautifully joyful day followed by a year of days to match.

CNN's Susan Roesgen Confronts Tea Party Protester Who Calls Obama 'Fascist' (Video)

I cannot believe the lack of civility in here.  No wonder we have a reputation as such a violent nation.  The U.S.A. I grew up in was not one bit like this.  People spoke to one another with respect even when they were not in agreement.  My grandmother must be twirling in her grave and itching to go out and cut a willow switch and then grab a great many of you and wash your mouths out with her huge laundry bar of Fels Naptha soap and then have at switching your bare butts.  She’d teach you to show some manners!

On '60 Minutes': A Time for Gun Control? (Video)

"Fifty people have been killed last month in gun violence."

According to the Center for Disease Control, which oddly enough is the place to go to find out how many people have died by gunfire in the United States in any given year, over 50 CHILDREN alone die in this nation EVERY WEEK from gunfire!  Children.  From guns.

Children.  Killed by bullets.  Over 50 every week.

On '60 Minutes': A Time for Gun Control? (Video)

On FACE THE NATION this morning, an expert from the Mexican government stated unequivocally that 90% of the guns being used by the drug cartels to kill there on the border with Texas are made and sold right here in the U.S.A.  He said that what you read claiming otherwise is a pack of lies made up by those who do not want the truth known.

It is not true that "we only need to enforce the laws we have on the books."  We need to put back the law banning automatic weapons (never used in hunting, and only for the purpose of mass killing) and enforce more extensive and in depth background checks.

I am all for guns, most especially rifles and shotguns for hunting.  I am just cringing at seeing my beloved nation become a place of ungoverned behavior full of bullets shooting wildly all over the place and killing so many innocent babies, children and bystanders.

Do you believe in God?

We made up god out of fear of death.  Because that fear exists, con men took advantage and began inventing religions in order to hold sway over us and enrich their own lives with the perks of that power.  When you do a deep study of History, you find that every religion, including our own Christianity, is a copy cat of the previous ones.

Four billiion years ago, life emerged in the form of bacteria.  That bacteria evolved according to the conditions prevalent on the planet as time went by.  About 700 thousand years ago, a mere moment in the whole picture, a creature evolved which was pre-human.  Fifty thousand years ago it became Homo Sapiens Sapiens, and walked out of Africa.  We are merely hotel/restaurants for the bacteria that invented us and keeps inventing us.  Of our more than 100 million million cells, fewer than ten million million, or 10%, are human.  Ninety percent of our bodies is made up of insects, protozoa, bacteria, viruses, fungi and worms.  Eventually, we will kill ourselves off and the bacteria will come up with something else.

Knowing all of this, I believe the species is important, and not the individual.  I believe in loving as hard as we can and giving all we have in and about us to give.  I believe in rational thinking and a rational use of our resources.  Religion comforts, but it also sucks up the time, effort and wealth we could and should put to good use for suffering humanity.

After death, we are done.  Forever and ever, amen.  No future.  No afterlife.  Just food for the bacteria.  Their individual life cycles are much, much briefer than our own, which may well be the goal of their efforts in creating us;  i.e., a guaranteed food supply for many, many of their generations.

Rush Limbaugh's Psychic Profile: Peggy Rometo on Why People Will Follow, Listen to Him

That is called attacking the messenger and comes from those who cannot put together an explanation of the message.

Rush Limbaugh's Psychic Profile: Peggy Rometo on Why People Will Follow, Listen to Him

I admit to being, for some years now, completely flummoxed by this radio ranter and his ilk.  WHY does such a large (apparently as much as 34%) portion of our citizenry LIKE being dumbed down?  Why this seemingly irresistible yen for the outrageous statement and the black versus white viewpoint, leading to a sense of glee otherwise only found in a dental office’s laughing gas or a band of hyenas in the wild?

I just do not identify with or understand relishing stupidity.  A desire to better oneself, to study all angles of any question, to drink in every possible fact attached to any question, THESE human traits I comprehend;  but this large ape and his followers, I believe they call themselves "ditto-heads," remind me of nothing so much as a band of chimps jumping up and down while making nonsensical noises at the top of their lungs.

The Right often makes reference to our Founding Fathers when defending their statements.  If they actually own the ability to read and understand the written word, they might benefit from The Federalist Papers and The Anti-Federalist Papers.  Two parties.  Two sides to the various questions.  But Oh so much civility and genius!

I, too, say thank god for our founders;  yet know they must be gagging in their graves.  The likes of Rush Limbaugh surely make them sick even in the perfection of their peace.
