Rembrandt? Picasso? O'Keeffe? Tell us: Who is your favorite artist?
Monet is my favorite.
Happy St. Patrick's Day! IrishCentral.com lists the Irishmen they think are hottest. Who do you think gets the (pot of) gold?
My problem, and the reason I had to vote "Other," is that I have never heard of a single one of these!
Liz Smith: What Is It About Rachel Maddow's TV Success?
I am having a hard time here; perhaps I need to go back to First Grade to learn to count?
For instance, if Doctor Rachel Maddow has no viewers, or only 3 viewers, how is it that many women of WOW have posted here that they watch her show?
I am one who watches the Rachel Maddow Show. I saw her as a guest on Keith Olbermann’s show for a long time and was Very Impressed. Then she got a show of her own, and I was Over the Moon! I find her intelligent, cerebral, savvy, brainy, witty, idealistic, well-bred, well spoken, intellectual, patriotic, caring, well prepared, smart, sharp, bright, clever, well informed, rational, practical, sensible and charming.
Count me in as a FAN!
Obama lifted the Bush-era ban on federal funding of embryonic stem-cell research. You …
Well, that is the thing. You’ve nailed it.
No one with religious beliefs needs to DO something they don’t believe in. They are not required to abort their pregnancies, eat pork, have sex outside of marriage, marry their own sex, drink alcohol, dance, hear music; oh dear, my bad, our laws DO require girls to go to school. They are not REQUIRED to have stem cells from embryoes repair their bodies. And anyone NOT of their belief system who aborts, eats pork, has sex, marries their own sex, drinks alcohol, dances, listens to music or has stem cells implanted does not in any way or degree change religious believers’ devoted lives! Not one little bit!
One of the finest research facilities in our nation is the taxpayer-funded National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, right outside of our nation’s capital. They have NO connection with any drug companies, hospitals, medical practices, or religions. Now they are freed up to use good, fresh lines of stem cells. You see, not only had Bush limited them by edict, but the lines he limited them to ARE NO LONGER ANY GOOD! So much for a president who thought he knew more than medical science experts. Let Scientists run Science, pastors run the church, and the president keep his sharp eye on the distinct line between them!

We are mammals of the animal kingdom, not gods. The myth that "god" is one of our species is just that, a myth.
It is so STUPID to deny our species the right to learn through intelligent scientific research how to cure the ills of our bodies. To say it is crossing a line or we are lacking in morality when our scientists study and work with the cells of embryos, who are in No Way people, nor have they been born into this world with the expectation of living a life, is just so dumb I find it quite takes my breath away to see people are still posting this incredible nonsense.
Fear is what is doing it. Fear that discovering cures for many of the things that kill off our numbers may show their precious beliefs to have been wrong. Men and women have been tortured and put to death horribly for centuries by religious leaders of The Church, and later proved correct in what they averred was the truth in Science. Religions have had to regroup and make way for the new Truths, but have survived so that people may be comforted over death. This cycle will go on and on, but it is high time we, as a nation, stop allowing people’s personal religious beliefs to stop the progress of Science!
There are millions of little born babies, boys and girls, who will benefit in many ways from allowing Science unlimited growth in attempting to learn how to improve their health.

Here is one 80 year-old pro-choice mother of 8, grandmother of 13, and great grandmother of 15.
We women who are mothers are not murderers. We have carried babies to term and relate to all other women and feel they should be pregnant BY CHOICE!
Have a baby yourself, and then express your views.

The basic and most important teaching of the Church is that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah and the Son of God and died for our sins.
The question of abortion is the Pope’s opinion vis a vis that of other clergy and religious and the body of the church, and not a basic tenet of the Faith. It does not appear in either the Apostle’s or the Nicene Creed.

If you have a brother who is a priest and a sister and an aunt who are nuns and your family has been Catholic for a couple of thousand years and you went all the way through Catholic school, including college, you don’t dump your religion just because you believe in Choice, birth control, same sex marriage, stem cell research, and women priests.
You tell yourself these are Social issues and Not matters of Faith. You recite the Creed and find nothing in it you do not agree with, and you stay right where you have always lived your life.
If everyone who professes the Faith were to abruptly leave the Church this very week on the basis of disagreement re these social questions, the pews would be almost empty henceforth. My daughter teaches at a Catholic school where even the nuns admit in personal conversation that they are all for these things and make jokes about when one of them gets to be Pope! Women of the church have been able FOREVER to separate their religious life from the persistent politicing of the various papal parties.
Most Catholics are born into their church and never consider it as sometihing to choose or leave. It is part of who they are. It is a vital part of their culture. I find this very easy to understand.

Joan, I would say that I have landed just about exactly where you are.
The Roman Catholic Church and all of the other groups so obsessed with the question of abortion above all other matters are quite literally minding the stove while the house burns down around them. What I mean is, we are killing off our Whole Species by polluting the environment to the point it is about to reach of tipping over and no longer supporting LIFE on this planet! If the picture is too big for them to contemplate, then just look at the Chesapeake Bay, which is 70% dead and getting worse, or any river or bay in your own neighborhood. Check it out and ask yourself:
WHAT are we DOING carrying on about abortion, for crying out loud???

Good on you, Margo!
What I would like to know is this: what causes the ugly negative streak imbedded deeply into the psyches of approximately one third of our population that feeds so desperately upon the lies of the like of that fat babboon, RL, and that ugly witch, AC, and that clueless wonder, SP? Do they honestly and sincerely not KNOW they are lies and show themselves up to be totally stupid and out of it? I mean, I understand political differences of opinion, and there is nothing more refreshing than to revisit such through a rereading of both the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist papers. Wow! But the arguments these great men (yep, sorry, all men) used were ALL based upon solid education and sincerely formed opinions. Rush depends entirely upon rabble-rousing LIES. It is just so disgusting and SUCH an indictment of our species!
Have you ever had a great injustice done to you, and have you forgiven it?
But the young boy in question had JUST come to work for the bank, while I had been there for over a year. He was fresh out of High School, I had both more education and more experience. He still lived at home with his parents, I was living on my own with 3 children. It made no sense At All!
But then, neither did the "highest grade in the class" thing. But we’ve come a long way, and while in those days we had to just take it or quit, now we can sue and win.
Have you ever had a great injustice done to you, and have you forgiven it?
The greatest injustices done me were done by my father, and no, I have neither forgiven nor not forgiven; I have simply ceased to care or hope (the latter because he is dead now.)
But there was a workplace one that today’s young gals, and that is Most of you, since I am 80 in 2 months, will not believe. This was before laws protected women at work. I went to work for a bank and took the banking-related courses they recommended at night. I won my finish-all-the-courses certificate with the highest mark in the class. The bankers were totally flummixed! The award ($100.00) given by the Bankers’ Association has ALWAYS been won by a man, they told me. We have NEVER had a woman win it, they told me. Well, I did, I told them. But we don’t have WOMEN even come to our meetings, they told me! Settle for the other prize ($25.00) given by the Bank Women’s Group at their, totally separate from our own, meeting! For the highest grade given a woman. But I was THE highest, said I. No matter! It just won’t do!
So I settled. Went to the Bank Women’s dinner meeting and was made much over. No one mentioned I got THE highest mark; they just said I had the highest mark given a woman. This was in 1962 in Maryland. Even the newspapers, damn it, gave the guy who came in second as the first. The professors were even stumped!
Months later, when I was head of the Note Department and had many other management chores, I noted a brand new male teller, fresh out of High School and dumb as dirt, was being trained by the dear head teller I had trained myself once upon a time. This young male, still with acne, was making MORE THAN I WAS just starting out! I was a Head of Household with 3 children to support! No matter, I was told when I protested in high dungeon: he is on track for top management some day, and you might have more children and will certainly be distracted from your career by your family.
I quit on the spot and never went back to banking. But galfriends, that’s the way it used to be.
Oh, and I got on extremely well with management and was doing a great job. They just had certain ironclad rules that required the ones with the Big Titles and little work to do be male while the females were of a lower order and did all the actual work of running the bank smoothly!
