How do you feel about school starting before Labor Day?

Cath c . Being a boomer, I agree. NCLB (No Child Left Behind) which Hillary Clinton proposed—BUT in no doubt a different form - by the George W Bush administration—and it came withou funding for the mandates……wel….. Are children being taught to reason, reflect, understand and be able to speak, write and also complete the necesary mathematical computuations necesary in so many fields today? Yes, the basics Can be tested: ie: grammar, arithmetic, geography by NCLBBUT…remember it can be taught creatively through such methods as co-operative learning, exploration, laboratories, and all the wonderful tools we have in this new age of technology. Momorization is only one tool in an ever-growing toolbox of methods. It takes dedicated and well-trained teachers to teach effectively.

How do you feel about school starting before Labor Day?

Went before our local school board and spoke up for “after Labor Day” start of classes. Three years later, all four districts in our county are starting then, even the Catholic schools joined in. We are temperate in climate. In hot states, most schools start earlier and my friends tell me the kids are happy to be in the air conditioning;especially those with no air conditioning at home.

China's Heartbreak, by Junling Cui

Liu Xiang was and IS a hero. So sad to have an injury. He is not alone in this misery. One mis-step and years of preparation evaporates into anguish. On a personal happy note!! Where can I post this? I am so excited. Just so my daughter wearing the “O” in GO USA at the end of the US-Australia basketball game. Anyone know is this will be aired on TV. Saw it live on msnbc.com. Is there a way to re-see this on the computer?

The Idea That John Edwards Had a Shot at Being President Makes Me Sick

Thanks! Made me smile. :) Your avatar has a personal ring to it for me. My husband, gave me for our first Christmas when we were just dating, back in 1972, a necklace with a pendant that looks very much like your avatar. Bailey, Banks and Biddle was the store. It opens and there is a photo of him and one of me at that age. Lots of hair back then; mine long and straight and his face with a beard and moustache. He still has a full head of hair but it is white grey now. My calla lily has become a small collection through the years accidentally. I got the pillow in 1973,London(the source of the avatar), a handcrafted lamp of porcelain in State College PA, a lamp made of glass in Moreno Italy and bronze purchased in Venice, a glass in Jerusalem, a photo in Egypt, paper twisted into Calla lilies at a local Jazz festival at Delaware Water Gap with Phil Woods. Just last year I was trying to “simplify my house” and realized I had been collecting this flower all along and loved them and apparently I have loved them all my life. I would have guessed daffodils and hydrangea were my favorites, at least in my gardens.

What stories would you like future generations of friends and family to know about you and why?

Stories, not self-tributes? Darn, and I was just going to write about the amazing things I accomplished. lol Can I talk about my greatest failure? For one year had a tiny spot of a children’s museum started back in 1993. Then the township took away the space…..and never used the space for anything. very sad. Why did I not continue on and get another location? Lost a second trimester baby. Second time too. Had two healthy kids and tried my best ot stay healthy and up-beat for them. Spent way too much time in hospital fro a variety of causes and still cannot work even now. My remembrance to future generations of family: “She tried and failed. BUT….she kept trying.” Ok-please tell me what this says to you……..

Why Joan Ganz Cooney Doesn't Care if You Only Know Her From Sesame Street

Wowowow…that would make a great remembrance note!!!! I hear in your response that this institution that you helped create, that reflects your point of view of the world, that has helped teach countless millions of children and often parents too, and is a bright light for the past century and this current century….well, I hear in your response that you are much more than just Sesame Street. Wowowow. I repeat. You are a gift, my lady. Thank you for all that you are. Thank you for letting us have a peak at the “other part of you” that you would like to share.

Olympics Chatter: Are There Barriers to Women Entrepreneurs in China? by Junling Cui

Hu Chao story is great. Intersesting how she had to think outside the box and re-direct her business format. When the Travel Channel goes to China with their fleet of shows, it seems both women and men are equally confident and competent in business. My sister-in-law from Shanghai said she felt there was a better respect for women and their abilities there than here in the US. She was surprised by this.

The Idea That John Edwards Had a Shot at Being President Makes Me Sick

Mugsy: “have a right to your opinion, just as I do, just as Julia does. It’s all good.” In reply. Well said. I believe this credo to my very core. This is why I look forward to seeing the opinions and thoughts here at Wowowow each day. I am a first-time reader of blogs and certainly it is a bit nerve-wracking actually writing to one. What I like is that everyone sems to be receptive with a wide range of ideas. thanks wowowow friends.

The Idea That John Edwards Had a Shot at Being President Makes Me Sick

Mugsy, Read some of your replies to topics and enjoyed your point of view…….but this….and I may be treading on sacred ground here…..so I may have ot run and duck……but the special art of a woman’s point of view is often using all her senses…including her gut as well as her brain…….to come to conclusions when communicating. Thinking without feeling is often what gets men who have made bad decisions into so much trouble. That and thinking with their genitals…..which clearly doesn’t work.

Michelle Obama to Open Democratic Convention

Hearing from a strong, intelligent woman like Michelle will be a great kick-off for the democratic convention. She will have a tough job as first lady, as Hillary Clinton and Rose Ann Carter have experienced before her. Wish her luck.

Here's Why Obama Owes Oprah One Million Thank Yous

Read carefully the posts here.thaks for the thoughts. We are not an island of opinions of course. We learn from listening to radio, tv, reading information on a computer, from people around us. We live in a world where we share common “people we can name” that are politicians, actors, musicians, writers, jouranlists, artists, people from history and yes even talk show hosts. We have a communiyt of “known shared people ” just as we have a community of family and those around us. When we need to speak of someone very smart, we may use Einstein orSteven Hawking or Madame Curie, not because they are our idols but because they fit the need to have a shared known reference. These are Famous World People. Oprah is a person in this catagory that we share as a known person. As I was going back and forth- Clinton v. Obama during the primariy season; I very much wanted to vote for Sen Clinton. I just had a fear of how honest she would be with the public. I know this hurts some to hear this. She has worked so very hard for so many issues I have cared and also worked for in my little community. But, call it a straw on the wagon that tipped the cart, a proverbial last straw….when Oprah came out and endorsed Obama, I listened carefully. Maybe other hundreds of thousands of people were just like me. ??
