A Life Lived in Chronic Pain: A Conversation With Cynthia McFadden and Lynne Greenberg

Dear Dona, I know we have spoken about our pain before, and my heart goes out to you and others who live with chronic pain. I battled against using maintenance medication for a few years until there were no other options, and take my meds as scheduled. What I really love about you and your story is that I never think of you as disabled. You always send out such positive messages with every post. I know there is still a lot of joy in your heart. I wish I could take you with mom and I on our cruise this year (we leave Sunday), but I offer an open invitation to join us next year to celebrate her 80th Birthday. We already have to have an O2 concentrator in our Stateroom along with a portable nebulizer. It would give us an excuse to get a big Suite that would accomodate that scooter! HUGS!!!! CA

On '60 Minutes': A Time for Gun Control? (Video)

I live in a ‘right to bear arms’ State. I don’t support individuals owning assault weapons, but I own two handguns for personal protection. I am trained to use and care for them, and don’t do so wrecklessly. If someone breaks into my home, threatens bodily harm to my mother or myself, I will shoot them. I was always taught that you never garnish a weapon as an idle threat, and must have it firmly set in your mind that if you present your weapon it is to shoot to kill before someone kills you. Sorry if that offends…I guess my 17 yrs of military service are showing. CA

Have you switched to drugstore cosmetics because of these economic times?

I’m pretty much like many of you who buy some high end products, but never put anything on my face from the drug store. I confess that I am hooked on the ‘free with purchase’ samples that work well for travel. I use Clinique, Lancome, and a make-up product on line called ‘Sheer Cover’ similar to Bare Minerals. I am allergic to certain minerals and additives that go into metallics and blue-purple shades of eye shadow and mascara, etc. I use everything with caution or I end up with large red racoon circles around my eyes that are actually skin burns. I’m pretty miserable right now due to reactions to the adjustments my doctors are making to increase my B-12 (a hive type rash all over). The reduction of Vit D which is helping with my dry skin and scalp is a good thing. The secret is finding out how much is too much, and I wish they would hurry up. Back on topic…I rarely use drug store products except for body lotion and sunless tanners where L’Oreal really is the same as Lancome. CA

Tell us: What about First Lady Michelle Obama most interests you?

Her presence and grace, and she carried it off without curtsying to the Queen, and putting her arm around her Royal Highness to boot. Go get ‘em girl! CA

'Guiding Light' is ending its 72-year run this fall. Is the soap opera passé? If so, what is taking its place?

No clue myself. I don’t watch the ‘soaps,’ but rumor has it that Novela’s are taking their place in my area of the country. ;-)  CA

Are you sick and tired of the economic news? Does it dampen your day and spirits? Have you stopped listening/reading about it?

I’m a news junkie, and go to different sources for different points of view on whatever is going on. If we drink from the same well all the time the water will always taste the same. There will always be enough news to read if we look for it. CA

In the harsh light of this new frugal economy, what did you buy/spend money on in recent years that you now regret?

I was already living below the poverty level when the economy began its downturn. I haven’t bought anything I regret buying in years. I resent having to pay as much as I do for my medications, and having to pay the same co-pay to run in and get a weekly shot from the nurse as I do for an appointment with my Dr. Other than that I’m good for now. G-20 Protests in London Turn Violent: Open Thread for wowOwow Readers

I agree Diana, that it accomplishes nothing and prevents legitimate causes from ever being taken seriously because they are all lumped together with a wide angle lens. It is easy to create a mob. They are a dime a dozen. Not so easy to have a peaceful demonstration for a just cause. CA

Are you more worried about the economy given the violent protests in London this week?

No, I expected it. I also realize that they don’t just represent one single issue. There are 20 countries with problems being represented at these talks. That means a cause for every reason. CA

Is the American prison system wrong for employing solitary confinement as a means of discipline?

Hmmmmm…solitary confinement is a gift. I know this will rattle some cages (excuse the pun), but I support the death penalty as well. Rather than Solitary I think they should divide the prison population into Cell Blocks of like minded criminals. White Supremists, Crips, Bloods, and all the others in separate cell blocks. If one is unable to get along with their ‘like-minded’ Block Mates, then they should be sent to spend some time in the Cell Block of the enemy they hate the most, and let them take care of the problem. I’m sure that would help trim down the prison population without even having to use the death penalty.

We just ended the protracted trial of a duo of murders (actually "one" because the other flipped on his partner so he would only get Life in Prison) who killed or injured humans and animals randomly over a two year period of terror in our city. The one pleading not guilty was convicted of 6 of the 8 murders, and dozens of other charges. The Jury sentenced him to 6 death penalties, and hundreds of years in prison. As I understand it, most spend a minimum of 20 years on death row before they are executed or die of natural charges. When I think about all the time and money that was spent by our State Law Enforcement and Judicial System to give this man his day in court disgusts me. The thought that we will now have to pay more tax dollars to keep him alive in prison while waiting to be put to death boggles my mind. It is probably more $$$ than the budget shortfall our state is now facing…go figure. CA

What is the most exotic creature (animal, bird or insect) you have ever seen in its natural environment?

Black Water Beetles found in the rivers in Southern China on the border with Viet Nam. They have big wings and itty bitty legs, and they were being served as a local delicacy at dinner. They actually didn’t taste that bad stir fried once I was politely informed that one yanks their hard shell wings off before eating and wash them down with a potent plum brandy.

March Madness has taken over. Are you following the NCAA tournament?

I used to follow almost all sports…then I married a watcher of sports, I divorced him and moved in with a man with two young sons and found that Little League, Pop Warner Football and Soccer made me crazy, then I dated a sports fanatic with season tickets to absolutely everything involving sports, and a 13 yr old son who played all of the above and more. The young man, and I use that term loosely, lacked good sportsmanship, swore like a truck driver, lived like a pig, and was a spoiled brat. After a while I figured out that he was merely modelling his father’s behavior. I lost all interest in watching sports when I found out I was dating the most well known heckler at all our local professional sports venues. It wasn’t a pretty sight. I saw a replay of ‘the three of us’ at a pro basketball game when one of the players took a swing at my date and struck me in the face instead. I survived and I look for a better quality man to date or I don’t date at all. Oh! Did I mention the settlement from my game injury lawsuit paid my way through Grad School. ;-)

I currently watch professional tennis and golf and horse racing. The rest of it is pure madness and I won’t even watch the others at home with QM (mom). She yells so loud at the TV you can hear her across the street. CA

Which designer's fashions do you feel best understand the needs of real women?

Renee, Since I have found new dips and curves as I have aged (way older than you), I have seen some lines coming out by Hispanic designers who take into the account the physical attributes and pocketbook of ladies with the physicality they find attractive. I suffer brain fade as I try to think of the Hispanic performer who is hostess for the Miss Universe Contest….OH! It’s Daisy Fuentes and I think she has a line at K-Mart. We also have Kohl’s stores here that have several top name designers doing ready-to-wear at very reasonable prices and speak to the issues of ‘real’ women with curves. I also order from a catalogues named ‘Venus’ out of Jacksonville, FL, and ‘Boston Proper’, Boca Raton, FL, that have a wide variety of figure flattering cuts and styles. I just love ordering slacks or jeans named their ‘Goddess Cut.’  I only shop the sales and outlet catalogues from those two places and just bought some very well made dress slacks ($29.99 ea) with a fuller hip and leg and the waist band isn’t cut so low that wearing them feels like indecent exposure. The Off-White ones are even fully lined! I hope that helps. CA

Octomom's Home a Circus, Says Fired Nanny

Sharon, Why do you feel the need to be so rude to those who are also expressing their opinions and might not agree with you? Oh, by the way, I believe you meant ‘O J Simpson,’  thus the nickname ‘The Juice.’ CA
