My Comments (2061 so far…)

Step into Nancy Pelosi's shoes for a moment: What should be done about Charles Rangel (D-NY)? What do you think will be done?

Has the Ethics committee made its report yet on the Rangel accusations? And has it been made public? Y’all sound as if it has. Or have we already condemned the man without having even a modicum of facts?

Making inferences and jumping to conclusions, and then calling the results actionable "truth" has become an all too common activity in the last decade or so it seems. It just makes me shiver in my boots, as I wonder when the gleeful cries of ‘off with his head’ will be directed not only at the famous, but at the commonfolk as well …

Be that as it may, it is taking a long time for the Ethics committee to come out with it already, don’t you think? I recently read they also are investigating Ensign (R-NV) for all that nefarious falderal about his mom and dad paying off his mistress and her husband — how long has that one gone on now? Been over a year, hasn’t it?

What's your No. 1 tip when asking for a promotion or a raise at work?

Perfect. Yes. And then draw up a plan to meet those goals. Consider checking in with the boss sometime during the year to see how you’re doing.

What's your No. 1 tip when asking for a promotion or a raise at work?

Be prepared to tell why you deserve it, and when asked, do so succinctly. Be confident and calm. Don’t argue, just present your case.

No Slacks in the Office: Gail Collins and Lesley Stahl Relive the Birth of Feminism

It’s not yet time to relax, no time at all to take it for granted. Not when it takes the force of a president and the majority party to pass a law as basic and fair as "equal pay for equal work."

No Slacks in the Office: Gail Collins and Lesley Stahl Relive the Birth of Feminism

Both Gail and Lesley say in the wOw article that they feel lucky to be living "now," in this time. I know they haven’t forgotten, but I feel compelled to add: It’s not only "now," but it’s here. How many women not of the West, women across all this great world still need to realize their own freedom, their own power?

In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

I understand why you say "truth" is subjective, M C. It certainly seems that way sometimes, especially these days. But there are many philosophers — from long ago and now — that say truth is real and solid, not something that is ephemeral or shifting, not something that is subject to the whims or biases of individuals. People reach for truth often, and it’s a fact that they just as often fail to grab hold of it, but it’s out there just the same. What’s nice about Rachel, I think, is that she’s willing to reach, even if it seems to shake rattle and roll her own beliefs. Now that’s really somethin’, isn’t it?

In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

This will be on Rachel’s show tonight, I suspect. But even so: For those who don’t support President Obama, you might want to skip the following link. For those who do support him, here’s the link to his talk last night in New York City. If you want to skip the intro, his talk starts at about the 7:30 mark. I suggest you watch it straight through to the end; the speech really does have its moments. Best to y’all …

In Defense of My Favorite 'Sick Puppy' – Rachel Maddow, by Mr. wOw

Though I don’t have cable, I watch Rachel Maddow’s whole show every single night on my computer (at MSNBC’s website) without fail. I’ve come to rely on her for her take on matters important to me. What a delight it is just to watch that steel trap of a mind capture the essence of an issue. Hm! I’ve also caught her twice on MTP and she added so much to the discussion. Very impressive. The best of them today, I think. And about Keith Olbermann: His passion for what he believes is a welcome respite from the obstructionists and naysayers. He’s moved me to tears more than once, and his last "special comment" on his experience with his dad in the hospital was indeed one of those times. I applaud Olbermann and offer with gratitude a standing ovation to Maddow for thoughtfulness and insight, for the courage to question all those in power (even progressives and liberals), and — perhaps most important of all — for their compassion.

Candice Bergen's Liftoff

I have those dreams, too, and absolutely love them, gliding up and down stairs, rising above the crowds, skimming the trees and wildflowered pastures … I’ve read that flying/gliding dreams are distant memories of being held as babies. That makes so much sense to me.

Liz Smith: Whoopi Goldberg's Super-Smart 'Head Games' (Video)

I hope for people like me (no cable)  the show will be available on the Web. I went to the Science Channel website and they have >1 minute clips, but not the whole show. I’ll keep checking it, though, and Hulu, too, just in case …

Yes! (Or, Oh No): <i>Time</i>'s The State of the American Woman

Thank you, wOw, for the ad for Gail Collins’s new book, “When everything changed:The amazing journal of American women from 1960 to the present." I read the excerpt and immediately got hooked. Can’t wait to get it in my hands …
