'Another Outrage,' by Jodie T. Allen

That’s what the web catalog says (link below), Phyllis. And none of it goes to a charity for the homeless.

'Another Outrage,' by Jodie T. Allen

I truly don’t understand the outrage, if there is any. How can there be outrage about a doll when there is no outrage about people? This doll in fact may symbolize the belief that the chronically poor, as well as the poor newly fallen from the middle class, are really doing just fine … really. "See?" I hear the doll say. "No one has to do anything so extreme as health care reform or bank bailouts and such. After all, I’ve still got my rosy cheeks! Tee hee."

Jeremy Hit Rock Bottom, by Sheila Nevins

Aye, what a sad sad story. I’m so sorry for Jeremy and his mom. So sad for you, too, Ms Nevins. Illegal drug use and the havoc it causes, especially in the young = tragedy.

What would I have done? "Tough love" is a  process. I’m sure your friend didn’t reach the point of changing the locks as her first attempt at it. But after years of effort and support and all the love one can muster for an addict, is there anything else she could have done? They say drugs are easy to get ahold of, so how can they ever be overcome without the user fully realizing s/he wants to be free of them? No, I don’t know what I would do in such circumstances. Guess I would just try and try and try until I couldn’t try anymore …

Are you for or against allowing consumers to buy health-care insurance across state lines? (Why or why not?)

Here we are again, wondering if less regulation will solve our problems. History seems to mean nothing … again.

Are you for or against allowing consumers to buy health-care insurance across state lines? (Why or why not?)

Hi RJB. I have noticed that many among the religious conservatives in power believe that money is god’s gift, a reward for righteousness. I suspect such a belief leads them to treat those whom god has not blessed with wealth as miscreants. So, to them being poor is a just desert, and they see no reason to blame anyone but the poor for their own lot. And if god has deemed it so, who are they to intervene, except when things like "charity" earns them extra heavenly credit! And even then, they expect the poor ‘pay’ for help with humility, gratitude, and deference. I don’t believe they see anything wrong with this arrangement at all.

How do you fall asleep after a long, stressful day?

I’ve had sleep problems since the Change started to come on. But I swore no meds, and stuck by it, and continue to do so all these years later. I figure it’s just extra time the Universe has given to me, so I try to make it productive — read, crochet, or just plain get up and do some work!

Joni Evans: Gender Bias in Book Publishing, 1973

That happened to me more than once—the "man has a family to support" argument. The last time someone offered it to me, however, was when I was a single mother with two little kids to support. And I said so! But lo and behold, the male prerogative is a hard thing to shake loose; he said to me, well you’ll probably marry again soon and won’t need it anyway. I was dumbfounded. And soon developed a new career strategy that worked even better than the one I had originally embarked on. (Also, I "told on him" by mentioning it in a humorous way to his wife, who I knew to be a feminist.) My new plan was more difficult than just expecting "fairness," and sent me in interesting new and profitable direx I certainly hadn’t expected,. Such is life. Sometimes adversity can work for you …

The Most Powerful Person in the Health-Care Debate, by Judy Bachrach

If by "control" you are referring to whether or not you go to the doc who charges too much, then heck, that’s what everyone IS doing by not going to any doc at all. Isn’t that one of the biggest problems we’ve been talking about in health-care reform?

;-)) good one, susan.

Friday on 'The View'

My apologies. I wasn’t criticizing you, Kathy Lee. Or stating my opinion. But merely repeating what he said so that you might see if it was accurate or not. Though I’m a lefty in most things, I’m not sure about Moore myself, and I don’t plan to see his film. I get upset about just ordinary straight unembellished facts; I’d probably blow a gasket if I had to hear much more than the few minutes he spent on The View—not because I’d disagree, but likely because I would. P.S."Overpaid actors and professional sports figures"—I’ve been thinking about that for years, and can never decide if they are "overpaid" or not, especially when compared to the profits they generate, but that’s another topic. Best to you, Kathy Lee …

Take Marcus Buckingham's Strong Life Test and Determine Your Happiness Quotient

Thank you, Lila Kuh. I did. It was fun, but I thought it applied more to what I do in business rather than who I am, but then again the two make up an integrated whole — so it was probably accurate for me, too. Thank you for the help!

Take Marcus Buckingham's Strong Life Test and Determine Your Happiness Quotient

DARN! I wanted to take the test but the "Start" link isn’t there or doesn’t work … I’m disappointed.

Liz Smith: Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant – India Says 'No Thanks'

Controversial? That just amazes me. Since when is "controversial" a reason for not distributing a film? Guess I’m cynical enough to suspect that the "controversy" is a corporate marketing strategy. Ah well. The trailer does look interesting:

Ditto ditto ditto, Belinda Joy. I really enjoy the characters Christine Baranski plays …
