Friday on 'The View'

What Michael Moore said was that not everyone pays SS on 100% of their wages. That only people who earn under $100K do, and that people who earn more than about $100K don’t pay a percent of the amount they earn after they reach $100K. He questioned the reasoning for that, and suggested that if everyone paid a percentage of all of their earnings, that SS could be solvent for many many years.

Summing the Summits: More Splendid Speeches, by Liz Peek

Well, now that we’re not in fact numero uno in everything (by our own estimation anyway), it will be interesting to see how the world economy shakes out, as well as what it will mean to all of us. It’s a scary place to be (not knowing). Is it possible that somehow eventually a greater piece of the pie for all workers will result in a concomitant slowdown of world population growth, more responsible use of all resources, fewer violent confrontations? I’m dreaming …

Friday on 'The View'

What a terrific surprise! I just caught Candice Bergen and Liz Smith on The View. I’m doing something really tedious and I turned on the TV so I could listen while I work, and there they were: two—no three—wOw women. Ms Goldberg is always beautiful. And Ms Bergen and Smith look SO wonderful! Wish they all had had more time to talk though … Oh! And I’m looking forward to "meeting" all the new people their appearance will bring to wOw.  P.S. wOw’s new "literary" contest sounds like fun. I hope everyone writes something to share … it’s just the kind of thing that originally brought me here (loved Sheila Nevins’s "interactive" posts). Looking forward to it, wOw. Thank you!

I was not commenting on the story, which I couldn’t bring myself to read given the source. I was commenting on the original remarks by the poster. Did I not make that clear? About your opinion: IMO not very interesting. But that’s okay. We can’t all be scintillating all the time.

"Hatred of enemies is easier and more intense than love of friends. But from men who are more eager to injure opponents than to benefit the world at large, no great good is to be expected." — Bertrand Russell

PDP, it looks like we were writing and posting at the same time. If I had seen your post, I would not have written mine.  So sorry.

Oh my goodness, I just re-read your post and see that you are going through chemo. I am so sorry, Deniseann. My best best thoughts are with you!

wOw Reports: What News Matters to You – And Why?

You will tell the that’s my idea? That really is very nice of you, Deniseann. Kids love that kind of thing and will remember it all their lives, even if they may feel a little reluctant or shy at first. And yes, religion and faith can be tricky. People believe one thing so much that they try to make everyone believe the same thing, not because they are evil, but because they are so very sure that’s what they’re suppose to do. IMO, human beings do have a way of turning good stuff into bad stuff, given half a chance. BTW: I don’t want to mislead you. I chose to be Catholic when I was a child, following the advice of my father’s sisters and brothers. Then turned to one of the Protestant religions as an adult. Now, old as I am, I just wonder about it all …

Thanks, Jack. (giggle) That is exactly what that cat is/was saying.

Oh joy! Here you are again, triple loading your post with high-inference language meant to appeal to our emotions— we, your poor hapless readers who wait breathlessly for you to pour what is REAL into our brains. Gosh, let’s see. Just in the first sentence mind you: "aggressively," "crusading," "takeover," "guise."  How would we know what to feel if it weren’t for you! But don’t stop; what would we poor empty vessels do without your flagwaving vindictives. You write them so well. Heavens, would we dare to make up our own minds by looking for the FACTS? Hmmm, sounds dangerous to me …

wOw Reports: What News Matters to You – And Why?

Stacy, they also owned slaves. Isn’t it fascinating how inconsistent they were? I hope we are wise enough to understand the general principles they put forth, not in the light of their own personal eccentricities and weaknesses, but as ideals to strive for in every way we can in order to protect our individual freedom to believe what we will …

wOw Reports: What News Matters to You – And Why?

Just a few thoughts, Deniseann: (1) Please don’t be afraid of taking your bible with you anywhere you want to bring it, even a federal building. That’s your personal property, your personal symbol of your faith, and by law should never be confiscated or you threatened for carrying it (as long as you don’t use it as a weapon or force it into someone else’s face kind of thing). That’s exactly what the women who are fighting to cover their heads with scarves are fighting for. Support them, and you will be supporting your own freedom as well. (2) Though Christmas plays are not permitted in public schools, they are permitted just about everywhere else, as long as it is on private property. Why don’t you organize your grandkids and their Christian neighbors’ kids and produce/direct one yourself? Put it on for some charitable cause, so the kids will learn two lessons: one, that they are Christians and two, that helping others is a good thing. Why deny yourself the pleasure? (3) And finally you wrote, "none of the other ones [religions] were spoken of or in existence."  I’m not sure of your meaning here, but the Pilgrims were well aware of Muslims and Jews, for example. Many lived in Europe for quite some time. I don’t know about the Far Eastern religions, but Europeans traded with them, so I suspect those religions were known too. Christianity has never been alone in this world, and I think the Good Samaritan knew that, too—as the story goes, he didn’t stop to check if the sick man on the side of the road was Christian, he just did what his heart told him was the right thing to do. I hope all Christians keep their hearts open in the same way, especially during these difficult times …

Well, nothing comes to me in the way of a caption. But can’t resist saying that my favorite here this morning is (no criteria except it made me giggle — and it’s sooooo catlike):
