My Comments (74 so far…)

Among women you know on Medicare, has the program worked well/been successful?

Do people realize that those of us on Medicare do pay a monthly premium deducted automatically from our social security? It often sounds as though folks think it’s free.

I am absolutely delighted with the coverage, and when combined with a supplemental policy is better than the private (mis)managed healthcare plans "covering" most of my patients. Furthermore, I see the best doctors available here in the NY area.

However, the pharma plan is ridiculous and needs some serious revamping.

I agree with Bonnie S. above. I am also opposed to the what I see as overuse of medications when alternatives such as exercise, better sleep, improved diet and even psychotherapy would achieve superior results. For that, perhaps the medical profession needs additional education and patience (not patients)!

ditto, ditto and ditto again.

We old folks need to keep moving our brains & our bodies, not sitting about getting too fat to move then looking for medications for every resulting ill. It’s unpleasant to watch our faces wrinkle, our breasts drop and our hair grey & thin, but it’s life.

Has there ever been a presidential election wherein you didn't exercise your right to vote?

Does the remarkable black woman president of Liberia, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf count? She received her Masters Degree from Harvard.

Without knowing how the sales of slaves came about, I do know they were treated abominably, abysmally, with unspeakable horror, so let us not blame the victims here.

I became a US citizen so I could vote, and have never missed an opportunity, including voting for Dick Gregory in a primary - still smile when I look at that button!

Which environmental assault is your skin most affected by?

Ginger & turmeric are good for arthritis. I haven’t yet looked further, but I heard that there is research going on into the value of turmeric. There’s Standard Process Boswellia, a compound of mustard seed, ginger & turmeric in a tablet, that I found helpful & it’s easy to take . Chiropracters carry it.

Which environmental assault is your skin most affected by?

At 76 I have no real wrinkles - a few "crows feet" and tired looking eyes, (I work 4 12-hour days/week) but people often compliment me on my skin. I’m a fair skinned, blue eyed Celt (Cornwall) with a history of squamous cells & 1 melanoma on my leg years ago. I always wear a hat & dark glasses. I garden a lot, now try to avoid midday. Since a brand name product has been touted, I’ll reveal that I have happily used Clarins products for 25 years and more recently a retinol lotion and a day lotion rx’d by my dermatologist, the latter under the Clarins. In addition to lucky genes, I was fortunate to grow up in farm country with a diet heavily weighted with fresh veg & fish. I’ve continued to follow a healthy diet and regular exercise. I recently found a source for delicious raw milk and now add fresh ginger and turmeric to my morning shakes. I do believe diet shows in one’s skin, after genetic influences.

APA Says Gay-to-Straight Therapy Tactics Just Don't Work

the power of often extreme social pressures - religious, family, & others, (we are surrounded) can be confusing, guilt-inducing, even terrifying, and thus we have people who are desperate to be other than who they are and fall prey to anyone who offers what may seem like relief. The costs can be enormous.

BTW, licensed clinicians who are available to provide therapy, if that is what is sought, include Licensed Clinical Social Workers, (MSWs).

Thanks Andrea for your clarification for those who mis-read the article. So-called "therapists" who claim to "re-train" are playing on the insecurities and self-doubt experienced by some homosexual people, mostly the result of society’s ignorant attitudes. Those of us who are legitimately licensed in the mental health fields see the torment that can result from such power-hungry sadists.

How are you reorganizing your food and kitchen duties?

Lucinda, would that there were more families like yours! Mine are adults now with their own almost grown up children, but they continue to participate in all the household chores.

How are you reorganizing your food and kitchen duties?

Yes, and here in urban NY/NJ, I’m rather horrified to learn how few young people know how to feed and care for themselves.

How are you reorganizing your food and kitchen duties?

Add my vote for the slow cooker - it’s a best friend! And what about all the wonderful casseroles we knew about in the 60’s & 70’s., especially those that were made mostly in one pot, without lots of fussy bits to combine? I always made double or triple amounts to freeze.

My advice to families with children is to teach them the fun of cooking as early as possible. Not only can they then help out, but will develop independence for later. I taught my sons to cook, sew, clean with the admonition to marry for love, not for a maid. It worked!

Interview With Anne Kreamer: The Going Gray Author Stands by Her Strands

After a few futile attempts to add color to my natural grey, I gave up. One day I encountered a woman walking toward me in a parking lot. Her hair was bleach-bottle orange, and she stopped me & said "How did you get your hair that color - I’ve been trying for years." I replied "I just waited", and kept walking. I enjoy my sparkling silver hair, but it must be well cut.

Country Mouse or City Mouse? Tell us where you live

I live in a historic brownstone district in downtown Jersey City. The PATH train to NY is a 10 minute walk away, and takes 5 minutes to reach the World Trade area of NY. I have a garden, a quiet street, and access to my favorite city 24/7.

Would you ever take it all off and pose nude?

When I was 12 my dad took me (from small town Cornwall) to London on a business trip. He designed elegant women’s knitwear - suits, dresses, sweaters -sold at Harrods & Liberty’s. During our stay there he took me to some of the great museums. Possibly at the Tate I recall him holding my hand as we stood in front of a large female nude and saying "Mary darling, I want you to enjoy the beauty of the human body, and never be ashamed of your own." Of course I was mortified at the moment, however, those words stayed with me.

While a midlife university student in need of money, I posed nude for artists on several occasions. It was interesting for me to be able to listen to instructors comments about their drawings, especially when I was taking art history courses. I never felt uncomfortable but I did feel like a partner as I attempted to provide positions that were interesting and challenging to draw and I learned a little more about art.

In my family "collections" I own dozens of male & female nude drawings by an uncle who was an illustrator in the UK. They are too lovely to throw away so I just enbjoy looking at them now & then. The human figure is a basic form in art and beautiful in all its permutations.

Dear Margo: I Hear Ya Knockin', but You Can't Come In

My right arm was in a cast, I was struggling to get out of the shower and dry myself off, when the doorbell rang with that familiar Saturday morning persistence. Still dripping wet, I draped the towel loosely around me, holding it up with my left hand just enough to cover my nipples and went to the door. The dear souls looked shocked at the sight of an almost naked 73 y.o. woman. They haven’t returned since.
