What does being a woman mean to you? When was the first time you knew it?

I tried to go to bed but I have a bad case of insomnia. So, I thought I would come back to this question. To me being a woman means being strong, graceful, tough, beautiful and resilient. I absolutely love being a woman! I don’t really know when I realized I was a woman. I would have to say it was some time in jr high; I really came into my own during that time and that is when I began to describe myself as a feminist. In addition during that time I came to realize that it is more than the ability to bare a child what makes a woman. That is why I listed resiliency as one of the things that makes me a woman because as I mentioned before I have primary POF (premature ovarian failure). Because of POF I didn’t go through the right of passage of menstruation that is often the physical sign of turning from a girl into a woman. To tell you the truth I do not feel any less of a woman because of my POF. As for discrimination that women continue to face, I see it as a challenge and a call to all progressive women to work for change. As we look back in history we are certainly moving forward but still have some work to do.

To the Guys, Good luck trying to answer this one.

What is the first thing you notice about the way people are dressed?

Maggie, I’m glad you brought the topic of ‘depending on the situation’. I completely agree with you. I always dress in professional attire. To me professional attire is the most comfortable. I absolutely hate jeans I own like two pairs of jeans and they almost never see the light of day. I don’t choose to wear other cloths but that does not mean I don’t accept that others like to wear other cloths that are more comfortable to them which is fine by me, as long as you said, fit the situation. I’m in my very early 20’s and my biggest pet peeve is to see young people dress unprofessional to events that require professional attire such as job interviews. I also hate when people wear what they think is professional attire or appropriate attire for the situation but they obviously missed the memo. For example the other day I saw this second year medical student following a doctor around and at first glance she looked fine but then I saw her feet. She was wearing an open toed open heel sandal. I had to fight the urge to ask her if she knew she was wearing open toed and open heel shoe in a HOSPITAL. One time I was at a conference and I saw a bunch of young women wearing flip flops but with heels. I seriously almost had a heart attack- no joke.

Happy Bastille Day! Who would you like to send to the guillotine?

I absolutely loved Joan of Arcadia! I never got a chance to watch it when it was on the air but my friend got me hooked on it on DVD. The funny thing is that its nothing like the shows I usually like but for some reason I absolutely love this show.

Should Spanish be taught as part of the mandatory curriculum in our elementary schools?

I think a language should be taught. As far as which one, they should at least have a choice between french and spanish.

Should 70-year-old women be given in-vitro fertility treatments?

In a way this is somewhat a civil rights issue. Does a couple have the right to have a child at any age? I guess when it comes down to it they doe, I think it is their choice. If we were talking about a man having a child at the same age it would be a different story. Because men and women are anatomically and physiologically different it is easy to sway your answer based on the sex of the old parent. Does a child not need a father as much as a mother? I think it does. I personally would never have a child at that age or encourage anyone of that age to have a child. I think it is a very selfish and irresponsible choice that can have very bad consequences for everyone involved-especially the child. Nonetheless, the answer is that it is a couples right and choice.

Peggy Noonan: Buy What?

I am the same way. I think it is because I don’t like to shop. I also always forget to take pictures.

If you were boss, would you hire your husband?

I guess no because I’m not married.

When is the last time you sent a handwritten letter?

I absolutely think that hadwriting is going to become a lost art because of computers. Not only that but I think writing and english is going down hill because of the computer. I have lost count of how many times I have heard a young person use lol, jk, or omg in their everyday conversations and don’t even get me started on texting. However, I love my computer dearly.

Eunice's Period. Stopped, by Sheila Nevins

Well, I was 16 and nothing had happened yet so I went to the doctor. They started me on small doses of estrogen. They tried to make the hormones rise like they would on a normal person so I took like a pill every other day for a couple of months and then everyday and so on, but I never really got a real period. When I was about 17 I got put on birth control so I could benefit from the hormones they carry as a form of HRT. The BCP gave me a fake periods and I continued that for years. Lately I have not been taking anything though. I cannot express how important it is to get a bone density test done and to take vitamin D along with calcium. Bone health is so important, especially after menopause, you are only as young as your bones. I have been to many doctors let me think endocrinologists, gynos, general, reproductive endocrinologists…. Thanks for taking interest because there is not much known about POF and there is very little research being done out there. I’m not a sensitive person but a lot of women that have POF are because a lot of the problems it can cause in one’s personal life. So I think the more other women know about POF the better. For example, I know this woman who told her friend about her POF and her friend would complain about getting her period in front of her and if that was not enough she told her that she was lucky that she did not have to deal with having a period. Stuff like that is what makes it hard for women with POF and not to mention when friends get pregnant, baby showers and a lot of other things like that. I figure if I can help one person understand POF and its emotional ups and downs I’m making life a little more bearable for one of my fellow POF sisters. Feel free to ask any questions, I would be glad to answer them to the best of my ability.

Eunice's Period. Stopped, by Sheila Nevins

My experience with this is unlike anyone who has commented. I have a condition called POF (premature ovarian failure). The POF is when your ovaries stop working and you enter menopause before the age of 35. However, I have the primary form of it which is when your ovaries don’t work from the get go. And if you were wondering, yes I have never had a period. I was placed on HRT for bone health and other reasons but going through menopause so early in life was not fun. However, now I’m doing quite well and for some reason I never in my life felt less of a women because I did not go through what is thought by many to be the one thing all women have in common or what makes you a women. I have met and talked to some women with this condition and they really have a hard time dealing with it.

At what age are you old enough for cosmetic surgery?

Well it depends if a person has a deformity I think plastic surgery should be done before they enter kindergraden. For women who are extremely flat chested and are super unconfortable with their breast size 22 would be the best age to have the surgery done. For women who need a breast reduction 22 would also be the best age. As far as other plastic surgery I believe after 40 would be the best thing.

Which would you rather be?

I’m very comfortable where I am. I have never been a healthy person, I have had cancer three times, so I thought I would give up on the idea. I would say brains is something that can be achieved by most, if really desired. Wisdom, however is something that is valueable to me because now it seems to be obtained by few.

Which would you rather be?

Easy I would want to be wise.
