I Was Robbed!

Sorry, I can’t help myself - you were burglarized, not robbed. And to address the topic… I also live in NYC, West Village (nice neighborhood, but old brownstone walk-up) and my apartment has been burglarized twice. I did not get the attention you describe from the NYPD. They gave me the “We’ll never find him, why bother” routine, followed by “If you don’t want to be burglarized, move out of the city.” I think you got good service because you’re famous. The NYPD isn’t that nice or hardworking for everyone.

And a suggestion… You might want to put the number of comments for each post on the home page. People like the interactive aspect and this is important information. Are there new comments they haven’t read yet? Okay, back to my taxes…

One more small comment on your “hair day” assessment… Today’s humidity only makes for a bad hair day if you have straight hair. If you have curly hair like me, it’s a great hair day. The bad hair days are the really cold dry days of winter. :)

On '60 Minutes:' Carl Icahn

Men have known this for a long time. Women tend to apologize and explain while men feel free to ignore what they prefer not to deal with and forge aggressively ahead. Hillary is an unusual woman in this way, and it’s why she makes many men so nervous. She knows the secret. When I got my first job as an editor (coming from a completely different industry), I kept apologizing for the work I did (though the quality was excellent) and constantly talked about how much I had to learn. My boss (a woman) finally took me aside and told me to stop doing that. Just do the job - don’t apologize for yourself. And on a different topic… I have always wondered, Lesley, why you were not given the job as anchor of the evening news. Katie Couric was good at her morning show gig, but she wasn’t the right person for an evening news anchor job. (Of course, Dan Rather never should have been fired in the first place.)

You are an awesome group of women - role models! I’m excited about this site. Thanks for starting it.

Women's Work

Scary. Horrifying. Or is it encouraging that we’ve come so far - not sure! I was born in 1956, so I was adolescent during the women’s movement in the 1970s. I wanted to take shop in high school, but girls at my school weren’t allowed to take shop. I had to take home economics. I tried hard to argue the school into changing that, but they wouldn’t. When I was 15 and my brother was 12, my brother had a paper route. He hated it and most of the time overslept, so we agreed that I’d take it over. But we found out when the carrier supervisor came over that a girl was not allowed to deliver papers at age 15. A boy could do it at 12, but a girl had to be of legal age to work. I was outraged. I took over the paper route anyway - it just stayed in my brother’s name. I grew up determined to have a professional career and not to spend my life waiting hand and foot on a husband. I never married and don’t regret that. It’s not that I don’t like men - I do - but every woman I know with a husband is still waiting on him. “A new little dishwasher.” Some things have not changed. (Preview shows blank lines are removed so comments have no paragraphs. Oh well.)

Political Gossip I've Never Published

Great anecdotes! Thanks so much for sharing them.

Which four women would you like to see on Mt. Rushmore?

I couldn’t decide. But I want to know why Candice would put Britney Spears on Mr. Rushmore!
