Are women harder on each other than they are on men?

I’m seeing that around me now. Really it’s very tedious.

I agree with you, Paisely Girl, that has been my experience. I also think that in a work situation some men tend to see competition as coming from outiside of the department or from another company. Their sense of ” team” kicks in quickly. We women tend to lose track of how much we personalize everything. And yes we set the bar unrealistically high for ourselves and others sometimes heralding unpleasant results. I currently work with too many women (for my taste) and I find that many of them are making themselves physically ill with unrealistic goals and expectations.

If you could live inside a movie, which would it be?

My sentiments exactly. Great clothes, beautiful houses, drinks at 5 dinner at 6; lots of household staff; a husband who is your playmate and dashing suitor. (I agree about the twin beds). Theater in autumn; Bermuda in February. I would also enjoy being Marion Kerby in the “Topper” franchise. Same lifestyle …but you’re a ghost.

Staying Too Long at the Fair: Time's "Influential" Dinner

Liz as always you gave us the best of the evening and we didn’t even need to go through the hair and make up ritual. The weird thing is I still love these evenings. The big diffrence is that like someone else has posted I pretty much have to arrange to take the next day off. Also I find that if there is some little bit of dancing (jazz ensemble) I drink less and the musical schedule keeps the length evening more manageable. Thanks again for taking us along!

Mary Wells on Political Correctness: 'It Drives Me Mad That We Can’t Just Say What We Think'

That’s the important thing to remember: THESE PEOPLE ARE STILL OUT IN THE WORLD. Use of these blatant or subtle techniques of shock are not limited to a certain age, gender, or race. Chicago 1996- My immediate supervisor’s husband (32yrsold) explains to my boyfriend the sexual things he would like to do to me (This was the first time we had met him. We were at a black-tie event). Phoenix 2002- My (white)50 year old female boss is yelling a joke featuring the n-word. She was a Sr Vice President. The company had 8,00 employees worldwide. Laguna Beach 2008 - While with an African American friend at a bookstore, a man of about 65 says to her: “You’re exquisite can you tell me what tribe you came from?” Add to that the times that I or a friend has been “accidentally touched” when were young and pretty and working in large corporate structures. For some, workplace competition means reaching down and back to the ugliest behavior to belittle others; true sign of poor credentials, raging insecurity, and moral as well as intellectual deficiency. We’ve come a long way…but we have to remain vigilant for the rest of the journey.

Who Stands to Gain the Most in Indiana and North Carolina: Clinton, Obama or the Republicans?

I think the “Maverick” thing must have come out of his own camp. This was supposed fool us into forgetting that he’s 100 years old (mentally)…and not in the good “wise with years” kinda way. Really, he might be worse than Bush. On the war at least we can say that Bush was too lazy (and possibly too stupid) to give full thought to what he was doing. McCain knows EXACTLY what a war is; the deep loss we’ve suffered. He says we’ll stay for “100 years if necessary” In that way he probably IS a maverick…He’s completely disengaged from reality (crazy).

wOw's Views on the News: Is it a Mistake to Hold the Olympics in Beijing?

Well put. The first time I saw the Olympic games they were held in Innsbruck, Austria. I was 8. Both my teachers and my parents it described as the one time when the whole world gets together to play no matter what. I have watched part of every Olympiad since. Even in my 8 eight year old mind I understood that this was really important. As I got older I came to appreciate the effort that goes into every facet of this event. I worked for a time at a company that was involved with the games and saw that the people who have been involved with the IOC (regardless of some minor corruption) see the games for what they are: A celebration of what entire an planet (of people) could be at its best. Lastly we must remember, politically speaking the worst Olympics were probably the Berlin games. If African Americans and European immigrants could stomach competing (and excelling) while Hitler watched, if they were able to contain their fear and revulsion in order to represent the United States with pride and dignity in the face of what was a deadly and repressive dictatorship… Then we owe the games and the athletes nothing less than our full support. As someone already posted, dialogue among nations is beneficial whenever possible. Besides right now, their biggest image os the U.S. is George Bush. Who still wants that to be our representative to the world?

What do you do more often than you'd like to admit?

I find that these things are in my litter bin of bad habits: 1. Surfing the net 2. Staying up late 3. Thinking about sex 4. Tasting grapes at markets (really nasty habit since you can usually SEE the dirt) 5. Obsessing about the awful little laugh line on the left side of myface 6. Avoiding any kind of paperwork (until it’s out of hand) 7. Making lists 8. Keeping clthes and shoes around too long (the style might come back) 9. Interrupting (I’m not sure when this started; but I’m trying to stop) 10. Worrying and making lists

How do you feel time alters your ability to be resilient in your life?

Thank you, Tamara I find that my resiliency has declined. Fear and worry are powerful captors. The transition from 40 to 45 (along with other health, finance, and professional issues) has been surprisingly unpleaseant. So your words are helpful and resonant. Thanks and continued good luck!

On Tuesday you told us what you slept in. Today, we want to know: How many people have you slept with?

She sure does have a right to her own opininon. Of course I don’t agree that I was out of line…but that’s my opinion as well. I was specifically responding to this statement: “With potential employers looking you up and reading your post this question is not too cool.” and the ones that followed; when I made my suggestion. Let me clarify: It’s not about whether or not I agree with everything you say, I just want to make sure that everyone is allowed their chance. Naturally, since this is a static form of communication what I said can be perceived as an attack on the very thing I’m tryng to defend. Tant pis.

On Tuesday you told us what you slept in. Today, we want to know: How many people have you slept with?

Now that’s what I call Sexual Freedom in the highest degree: Free to not do it! Not for me but …I rejoice in your decision all the same.

Feet of Clay in a Roman à Clef?!

I was the spare wife in my cousin’s marriage. He and I did things that didn’t interest his wife. When I would travel to NY from Chicago we would always spend time together. I’ve had this type of connection a couple of other times. I’ve lived on both coasts and in between. In my experience this generally happens more in cities where there are more social/charity obligations and more specifically in situations where there is a climate in the marriage that encourages both people to find time for individual as well as joint pursuits. It can be great.
