Book Excerpt: <i>Going Gray</i> by Anne Kreamer

Interesting subject. I’d never spoken to anyone about their hair until I decided to go from three or four colors of blond-ish to dark brown and very long to as white as I could get it. Well, I just couldn’t get reallly white most of the time.  I don’t have time for all that any more. I’m going to get it cut in a short, cute cut and let it grow out. God knows what I’ll find. It’s been shades of brown for many many years, but I have a suspicion there’s something very different lurking underneath.

Maybe I’ll get Anne Kreamer’s book first.

Iconic Hairstyles – and the Famous Faces Who Made Them Popular (Photos)

Could we not have to look at Pantene commercials in the middle of a WOWOW photo essay?

Are you satisfied with Bernie Madoff's sentence of 150 years in prison?

Deena, it’s not an either/or comparison. Madoff’s sentence was a message to others who think they can cheat and steal from people who trusted them. Of course, Madoff won’t serve his whole sentence, but the number 150 is a good warning by the judge. I thought it was a good move.

Poetry: Not Dead Yet, Argues Katha Pollitt

Absolutely, Laura. I encounter many budding poets yearning to have their work edited and put into their very own book for friends and family. I pull it together and set it in a lovely typeface and produce their first publication. It’s fun to see someone who hasn’t seen themselves in print before. Better than that I’m trying to get poets and writers to make their own books, and write their work in them. I have a new website for poetry enthusiasts to check out. http://www.MakeYourBookCourse.com.html     It’s an eight week online book design course. People can learn how to make eight different styles of books, and I give lots of advice and information on the side plus a free e-book. I hope some of you will look at the new website. This gets going after I move my whole household to a small apartment and fall down in a dead faint with my poor sore feet in the air. It’s going to be 98 tomorrow - and the monsoons have begun right on time… and I’m moving. My luck.

How do you cool off in the heat of summer?

Me too, Lizzie. Right now it’s blowing in a storm.,.. I mean BLOWING. The dog is in a panic. She hates wind, and this is very strong. I had to go out and rescue the garabage can that wasn’t picked up. But I think it’s better a little cooler than the 102’swe’ve had while I’m trying to pack everything in a full house and move to a small apartment. It’s going to be a fun squeeze! Thank goodness for good friends helping. I didn’t know I even had such friends.

A Warning From Jean Chatzky: Hidden Bank Fees Coming Your Way

Yes, Marjorie, I’d like to hear more about what y’all say about credit unions. I don’t know anything about them, but have heard good things lately. Are they as good as a regular bank for just every day banking? What are the downsides? I’m becoming very wary of banks these days. They’re too big and my money is too small. Hellllllllllllllllp!

How do you tell the time?

Digital, digital, digital… I hate digital clocks of any kind. They give you such a limited view of the time. It makes you think about how much time is left, or how much time until…  A regular circular watch or clock gives so much more information. You immediately know how much time to the next hour or half hour, also how much time has elapsed since the last half hour etc.

Now, if someone could just make a nice lady’s watch with the day and date. I’m always having to rush in to the computer and see what day it is and what I’ve missed. Or maybe that’s just my problem. The memory’s going, going, going….

Liz Smith: We're Gaga for the Lady (Gaga)

Lady Gaga—- yabbut, what does she really look like?

Violet Eyes is the best one IMHO.

Do you watch late-night television?

When midnight rolls around, I’m just warming up. Doesn’t anyone watch the Discovery Science channel? Or Nat Geo? I spend a lot of time there. I’ve already Tivo’d Charlie. He comes on here at 1: in the afternoon. Then every coupe of days Netflix sends me another great movie. I love TV. It’s a wonderful invention.

What scent do you associate with a pleasurable memory? An unpleasant one?

Hahahahha… The animal rescue man actually told me about Massingills. He was a sweet little man with bald head and a big mustache, and he blushed when he said the word. Then looked up at me to see if I ‘got it’ at all. I smiled and said, "Yes, I’ll get some right away. He was so embarassed. Poor dog was banned to the yard until I cleaned her up.

What scent do you associate with a pleasurable memory? An unpleasant one?

I was one of those unfortunate youngsters who was put to the terrible task of having one of the first Toni Home Permanents… out in the back yard because it smelled so bad. Stinkey, stinkey, stinkey.

What scent do you associate with a pleasurable memory? An unpleasant one?

Yes, Phyllis and Frannie, I’m always longing for a whiff of mountain pines. It’s from my childhood right into adulthood up at Lake Tahoe in CA/NV. I even keep the Christmas wreath up all year because if I walk near it, I can still smell the pineyness. The big, deep woody smell of giant redwoods makes me smile too. So does Chanel 5… the only perfume I wear. It just says ‘me’. For bad smells it has to be smoke. I’ve fought hillside fires near and under the cantilevered house in Los Angeles and smoke makes my skin creep.

What do you hear outside the windows of your home at night?

In the middle of a city (Tucson AZ) it’s difficult not to hear the sirens and the loud cars, but I’m a night owl and can hear what I want to hear. After living in Mexico for ten years, I can just about shut out any noise outside my windows. I practised on 17 tin can church ‘bells’ and a dog next door that never ( I swear) took a breath - he just kept barking all day nonstop. I wonder how he ate anything. But now in Arizona, the night is the best time to sit outside and feel the cool air because that’s the only time it’s cool! I’m writing this at 11:30 pm and I’m heading outside in a minute. I’ve also become the midnight gardener for the same reasons.

wowOwow Executive Intern: Is it Oogly When People My Age Use Facebook as a Business Opportunity?

"Tell us: Is it a social no-no to use Facebook to peddle your business?"  Not in the least! Why would you care if someone from your 6th grade sneered at it anyhow? I use Facebook, MySpace, Squidoo, Twitter, Digg, Linkedin and any others I come across.  When you’re trying to promote a business so it will work, you have to contact people who aren’t trying to sell you their business. The internet is full of them. It’s like preaching to the choir… useless.

The social networks are people NOT trying to sell me anything except their life story, which I haven’t time for. However they might be interested in  "If you want to make money working at home…" because they just passed by on their way to whatever, well, I’m happy to tell them about the program.

I’m not embarassed that I want to help people out of this terrible recession… and I can, so I tell everyone on the internet… especially those who are there to chat and chat and chat and chat….. and endlessly chat.

The Sisterhood of the Vanishing Paystub, by Sally Koslow

Yeah, Slinky, I laughed at her silly worries about shopping. But I also laughed at anyone who stays in New York City more than a week. To live in a place where you have to ‘put up’ with so much isn’t my idea of home. Here in Tucson we have some good restaurants and fancy places to shop, but I never go there any more. I’ve had great meals all over the world before, so it’s not that it’s something I’ve never known. I’ve had money in 3 or 4 countries and now I haven’t. But I decided that I wouldn’t sit around and wait for something or someone to pass by and insist I take this wonderful job at a fantastic salery. So I had to just do a ‘Little Red Hen’. Thank goodness I found an internet program that really makes a difference in my eating and dog-feeding habits. This program helps me and anyone else who joins up. I’d like to make something clear while I’m thinking about it. Gift giving is not a Ponzi scheme or a Pyramid scam. It is absolutely legal and morally correct. I’ve had some back talk lately, and it’s from people who don’t know what they’re talking about. I’m glad I’m gifting to those who need a gift, and I’m also receiving because I need a gift too.

Sorry for the soap box. I’ll go get an ice cream bar now.
