Liza Donnelly's Cartoon of the Week: The Confirmation of Sonia Sotomayor

Liza-love it!  Considering Sotomayor has had to be so careful, so as not to offend all the "sensitive white men", it would be great to see her fiesty side.  But I suspect she will be pretty circumspect for awhile.  I would love to be a fly on the wall during the SC case discussions.  Wonder what Scalia is thinking.

Jane Wagner Care-Toon: Home Foreclosure

Jane, So nice to see you back; although I admit I haven’t been to WOW in quite awhile.  The subjects, for the most part, have not intrigued me and the cyber-nasties got to be too much.  But I have missed the sandbox the most.  I love the latest artwork; you are a treasure.  It helps me stay hopeful to know that there are people who care about the people who are being hurt in this latest meltdown, not just the "politics" or "process".  I have a thought on twitter, actually all of the many "communication" mechanisms that are popular.  Why, with so many new technologies, does human empathy seem to be on the decline?  Are we talking more and saying less? I am not sure that we understand each other better or that there is any improvement in the quality of our "community".  Just saying!!  So glad to know that you will still be contributing at WOW.  Thank you!

Comments of the Week 2/7 - 2/13

I have been absent from WOW for awhile because of the vitriol that has been aptly described above. But these comments have also reminded me of how wonderful it was to converse with the intelligent and articulate people here and how much it has added to my life. Like Countrywoman it encouraged me to learn more about the blogosphere, which has enriched my life. I would so hate to lose this community and its potential. Other than being vigilant about our own comments and ignoring trolls I am not sure what else we can do.

Comments of the Week 2/7 - 2/13

Countrywoman, I have so much respect for your clarity of thought and your sincerity. I feel that you express what many of us think but have a hard time articulating. For awhile now, maybe since 9/11 I have felt the level of fear in this country and probably the world, rising. When combined with ignorance it becomes a deadly potion for anger and searching for scapegoats. You said it so well-we are all on this ship. I hope Lincoln is right and that “our common bonds of affection” can be preserved. We have a better chance of success together than apart. Peace to you, Elisabeth S

Liz Smith: Nancy Pelosi, Buy a Clue!

phyllis, we do need something like a truth and reconciliation commission. we need it to heal the country.

Liz Smith: Nancy Pelosi, Buy a Clue!

so, marjorie, if someone handed you over to a foreign power that threw you into a prison, never charged you with a crime, but tortured you and kept you in that prison for 5 1/2 years, how would you feel about all those perpetrators? some of the prisoners at guantanamo have just that story. it is no wonder that it takes a courageous man like barack obama to break the cycle of wrongs.

Liz Smith: Nancy Pelosi, Buy a Clue!

dennis kucinich drew up a list of 35 articles of impeachment against george w. bush: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/busharticles just because congress did not act to impeach him in 2007 or 2008 does not mean he is innocent or a decent person. let there be a special prosecutor.

marjorie, what good is it to have laws if we don’t use them? nixon’s pardon begat iran-contra. reworked nixonians became vice president and secretary of defense under bush, who did not rein in their worst instincts, but instead gave them free rein to subvert the constitution. we must bring their worst abuses to account. my complaint about nancy pelosi is that she did not let john conyers hold impeachment hearings early in 2007. if someone commits murder, do you say: “don’t worry about it?”

Torture Holding up Holder Confirmation

frank, if you check up on the marc rich pardon, you will find the israeli government behind it and palestinian-israeli negotiations in the balance. my source is huffpo a few days ago.

lori, did you realize that jimmy carter kept us out of war and bequeathed peace to reagan’s presidency? he also bequeathed alternative energy efforts, but as soon as reagan got into office he got rid of the solar panels on the white house and the weatherization of homes for the poor. he also tried to get us to use personal virtues like saving rather than living on credit cards toward a national economic improvement.

The morning after ... What should post-presidency George W. Bush do from here?

yes, george, follow the evening news maybe you will learn something.

it was egypt and european powers who negotiated the cease fire in gaza. perhaps we can hope that all nations assume their places among the powers of the earth.

mo, i was being a wiseacre to want to ask you what song, but it goes like this: o beautiful for spacious skies for amber waves of grain for purple mountain’s majesties above the fruited plain america! america, god shed his grace on thee and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea.

joni, first of all thank you for this site. i met my sweetie here. secondly, i agree with you about hoping that this tone of working on american problems as americans can continue. i can remember a time when we all pulled together, and we can do it again.

Margo Howard: When MLK's Dream Came True

that was a lot of joy out there on the mall today.
