The One Birthday Wish I Have for John McCain

Well said, Mugsy. And Joan, please accept my apology for the crack about not trusting you because you look like Laura Bush.

Julia Reed Asks: Where's Obama in This Convention?

So, Julia — are you ready to eat your words? Bill’s speech was everything Obama could have hoped for. Hillary’s made me feel great about supporting her right up to the end, and my vow not to contribute to Obama since he didn’t offer the position to Hillary. (Or did he? We really don’t know. Looking back, this entire controversy could have been cooked up to guarantee maximum suspense and publicity in that meeting with Sen. Feinstein.) All I know is, Hillary supports Barak and I wouldn’t think of doing anything else. (Go to end to see the rest of my comment.)

The Capitol? Sometimes a movement needs a banner and an event to rally behind. I just learned on PBS that FDR and JFK both gave their speeches outside in larger venues. With an exciting young leader like Barak Obama, why should we settle for anything less than spectacular? I don’t recall anyone complaining about the opening ceremony spectacle in Beijing. It inspired the world, in my opinion. As did the launch by the Democratic Party tonight of the next POTUS. He’s going to win, ladies. I was as staunch as any Hillary supporter, but Bill Clinton’s right. We all need to be on the right side of history. We cannot stand 4 more years of McSAME.

All Eyes on Hillary Clinton ... UPDATED 10:00 AM: wowOwow what a night!

DeBurca — this is very helpful. Pardon me for observing that it’s a bit condescending (and inaccurate) to say “Obama Passed Into Law” …. Most of us realize the Illinois Senate Leadership made it possible for Barak to get his name on so much high profile legislation, and obviously nothing would have been “passed into law” without the approval of the leadership of both houses of the Illinois of the State Legislature. This is the kind of rhetoric that rightly drove the HRC campaign (and supporters like me) up the wall. Don’t get me wrong, though. At last I’m at peace with the outcome of the Democratic Party’s nominating process. At some point the Obama pollsters must have made the determination (and this may have been true all along) that Hillary on the ticket would cost more than it would be worth in terms of the loss of potential “swing” voters. I cannot believe Barak Obama made this decision on any basis other than the effect it will have on the outcome of the election and the future of our country. Nor will I ever believe he made the decision on the basis that he is not “strong” enough to be president with Hillary Clinton as his VP. I believe this speech tonight and the others Hillary (and Bill) will deliver in the weeks to come may garner more votes for Obama than Hillary’s place on the ticket would have. We all know how many women there are out there who have used her forgiveness of her husband’s infidelities to rationalize their hatred of Hillary for her feminism and success in a man’s world. These are the women who call her a b**** and say all their friends are men (because women are petty or whatever.) Then there are the male mysoginists who may stay home or out in the duck blinds who may otherwise have been motivated to go to the polls to vote against an Obama / Clinton ticket. When it comes to enacting the Democratic Party platform Barak will need the strong leadership of Senator Hillary Clinton. I’m not in favor of Hillary accepting a position in an Obama administration or doing anything more than remaining in the Senate and taking Harry Reid’s place. When we have a woman Speaker of the House and woman Majority Leader of the Senate history will have been made nearly to the extent it would have been with our first woman president. And I believe we will have a woman president in 2016, and her name will be Chelsea Clinton. At last I’m at peace with the outcome of the Democratic Party’s nominating process. Joan Juliet Buck: From Auden to Yeats

Serendipity brought Chaucer’s CANTERBURY TALES to my night stand recently (a modern English translation) — yes, it’s captivating poetry, and often funny as heck … it makes me want to write (perhaps i’ll try haiku again.)

In celebration of Kay Ryan's appointment as the 16th Poet Laureate, tell us: What is your favorite poem of all time?

anything by emily … IF I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain; If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain, Or help one fainting robin Unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain.

Madonna (We Know You Don't Care!) and Satire Gone Astray - Has The New Yorker Lost Its Mind?

I too watched the Charlie Rose interview with the New Yorker editor, and am in agreement that the Jon Stewart / Stephen Colbert assessment is the correct one. It’s a f****** cartoon!!!!!!!!!!!! The last thing in the world for Barak or his supporters to be upset about is a cartoon satirizing those who see him as a Muslim fanatic — it’s the Muslim fanatics who get upset ABOUT CARTOONS !!!!!!!!!! As for the idea that the editors are anti-Obama — that’s simply bizarre. No one at the NY`er has been apologetic about this decision at any time, and for good reason. They’ve been giving Barak’s campaign the velvet glove treatment from the get go. Moreover, this controversy may prove an effective way to get the country focused on a hate campaign that has been surprisingly difficult to combat, considering its utterly ludicrous claims and the widespread condemnation they have received. Obama supporters should be thanking the New Yorker for what may prove a highly potent inoculation against the inevitable Swiftboat campaign to come. If the brouhaha succeeds in teaching the country a needed lesson in the ABC’s of political satire, while at the same time bolstering the defenses of the electorate to withstand tactics based on fear and hate, bring on the Pulitzers, by all means.
More importantly, if The New Yorker’s financial bottom line is improved as a result of increased circulation, and its historic place on the U.S. media landscape made more secure, so much the better. I have no problem with this venerable publication getting a boost / bounce / bonanza from such a consummate demonstration of literary chutzpa, nor should the Obama team.
The cable networks build empires exploiting our electral process on a 24/7 basis, raking in obscene amounts of cash with so-called political coverage (not to mention candidates’ ads.) It’s an appalling business model, but — as destructive and debilitating as it is — perfectly legal, and rarely questioned. I’m starting to wish I could figure out a way to make a buck off the process with my head held high the way Ariana Huffington’s organization has succeeded in doing; my hat’s off to them. Hell, I might as well tip it to Drudge too, while I’m at it.

It’s been awhile, Mugsy. Are you supporting Barak Obama? It seems so.

Mea culpa, Peggy. Mea MAXIMA culpa. Liz, I guess I can believe you read the book — such “things” are an occupational hazard, no doubt. Mike in Honolulu

The victim is us, and who knows who the perpetrator is.
